KIPP NYC Public Schools is a non-profit network of free, public charter schools that prepares students for success in college and life. In 1995 we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in The Bronx. Our goal was to graduate students with the strength of character and academic abilities needed to succeed in high school, college and beyond – and in so doing, to prove what is possible for all students. Today, our New York City network is comprised of eight elementary schools, nine middle schools, one high school, and KIPP Forward, a comprehensive support program for our alumni. KIPP NYC Public Schools currently serves more than 9,350 students and alumni and has a staff of more than 850. KIPP NYC is continuing to grow and opened two new middle schools and an elementary school August 2021!
KIPP NYC’s Associate Director of Payroll and Benefits will be responsible for oversight of functions and systems that relate to or impact Payroll, Compensation, Benefits, and rewards for all employees. Reporting directly to the Senior Director of HR Administration, the Associate Director will manage 2 full-time HR professionals in a dynamic, high-performing environment. The Associate Director of Payroll and Benefits will partner with Finance and the Payroll Specialist to optimize payroll processing and the annual compensation process. They will also oversee and ensure the efficient processing of employee benefit programs. This position is hybrid with opportunity to work out of our Shared Services Team’s (SST) office in Midtown Manhattan, and may require travel to KIPP NYC schools and programs, located in Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn.
General Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Payroll
- Oversee the semi-monthly payroll process to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Review and approve payroll once Payroll Specialist has input the data into UKG.
- Partner with Payroll Specialist to develop strong controls and procedures for the payroll process.
- Maintain and update knowledge of federal, state and local government regulations and reporting requirements that affect payroll processing.
- Oversee the delivery of exceptional, forward facing, friendly customer service related to payroll inquiries.
- Review quarterly and annual tax filings where necessary.
- Manage all payroll-related federal & state reporting requirements.
- Oversee the annual W-2 reconciliation and distribution process.
- Partner with the People team on all compensation processes (salaries, promotions, bonuses, employee incentive programs, etc.).
Benefits
- Collaborate with external benefits and compensation advisors to stay abreast of emerging trends.
- Partner with Benefits Manager to ensure effective and efficient management of benefits programs and partners.
- Oversee open enrollment processes.
- Evaluate and onboard new vendor partners as appropriate.
- Manage benefits communication plan.
- Ensure benefit program compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
Talent Development
- Manage and provide professional development for direct reports, including training, coaching and performance management.
- Leverage strengths of team members to create a positive work environment with high employee engagement.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field highly preferred
- 5+ years of HR Generalist experience, with a minimum of 2 years of management experience
- 3+ years of Payroll management experience, preferably processing multiple companies simultaneously.
- Experience with UKG, UltiPro or Kronos preferred
- Meticulous attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills; ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information required
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite, including Advanced Excel skills required

Compensation and Benefits:
KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $87,550 - $100,940. Salary ranges at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual salaries are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience relevant to the role and scope of responsibilities, and are benchmarked against others within the same salary band.
