The Recovery Support Specialist (RSS) is a valuable member of the integrated at the Kaleidoscope Center and provides peer support services to women and their families who are seeking recovery from substance use disorders. The Recovery Support Specialist functions as a role model to peers; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serves as a consumer advocate, providing consumer information and peer support for consumers in outpatient and inpatient settings. The Recovery Support Specialist performs a wide range of tasks to assist women in regaining optimal functioning within the community and mastery over their own recovery process. Recovery resources such as booklets, tapes, pamphlets, and other written materials will be utilized by the Recovery Support Specialist in the provision of services. The incumbent will support and uphold a commitment to racial and ethnic equity and/or antiracism.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides positive strength based parenting skills to promote safety and child wellbeing.
- Assist consumers in setting up and sustaining self-help (mutual support) groups, as well as means of locating and joining existing groups.
- Teach and role model the value of every individual’s recovery experience.
- Utilize tools such as the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) to assist consumers in creating their own individual wellness and recovery plans.
- Assures confidentiality.
- Serve as a recovery agent by providing and advocating for any effective recovery-based services that will aid the consumer in daily living.
- Assist in obtaining services that suit a consumer’s recovery needs by providing community resources and groups that may be useful. Inform consumers about community and natural supports and how to use these in the recovery process. Community resources may include but not limited to social security office, Department of Child Services, local YMCA, Library, restaurants, clients’ service organizations, apartment complexes and other types of housing, etc.
- Assist consumers in developing empowerment skills and combating stigma through self-advocacy.
- Evaluates and assesses the holistic needs of consumers and has the ability to function across environments.
- Assist enrolled women in identifying and addressing issues that hinder their recovery and would create future crises if left untreated.
- Uses appropriate de-escalation and prevention techniques with consumers develop coping strategies to support ongoing recovery.
- Makes appropriate referrals (face to face, telephone) to other professionals and community resources based upon the needs identified by enrolled consumers.
- Able to works shifts that include evenings, holidays, and weekends.
- Enters service data following completion of assessments.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED. Some college preferred
- 2 years participation in recovery and abstinence from drugs or alcohol, certification as a CHW, CRS, or CAPRC I or II preferred.
- Prior experience with mental health crisis response preferred.
- Strong communication and writing skills. Bi-lingual skills (Spanish) a plus.
- Familiarity with Systems of Care values and principles.
- Highly organized, and effectively manages multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Professionally articulate in communicating (oral and written) service expectations, strengths and needs of clients and outcomes.
- Demonstrated professionalism working in teams with internal colleagues and external audiences in both person and through various electronic media.
- Enthusiastic about advancing system change within the community.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Operational smart phone.
