Tehachapi Unified School District has a vacancy for a 7.0 hour per day/5 days a week/185-day work calendar, Intervention Specialist at Tompkins Elementary, Jacobsen Middle School and Tehachapi High School.

Tentative Times: 8:30 am - 4:00 pm

TITLE: Intervention Specialist

REPORTS TO: Principal/Vice Principal

DESCRIPTION (DEFINITION & DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS):
Intervention Specialist is responsible for assisting with the development, preparation, and implementation of a program that works with and advises students identified as at-risk students. The criteria for the program is: students who are mildly at-risk and probably not receiving counseling elsewhere; students who are experiencing difficulty as a result of family problems (divorce, parent in prison, etc.); students with drug/alcohol abuse issues; students who are withdrawn, shy, difficulty adjusting (new students); repeat behavior problems, disruption in the classroom/playground.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (EXAMPLE OF DUTIES):

- Teachers and site administrators identify students in need of these services.
- Teacher or administrator contacts parents and explains program.
- Verbal permission is received from parent and followed up by written permission slip sent home, signed and returned to site. This is essential.
- Intervention Specialist sets up counseling time with teacher (one time a week, 30-40 minutes).
- Intervention Specialist will meet either individually or in group sessions of 3-4 identified students.
- Intervention Specialist will meet periodically with teachers to determine progress, changes, etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS (MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS):
Knowledge of:

- Program goals, objectives and standards.
- General needs and behavior of pre-adolescent students
- Counseling methods and techniques.
- Communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Maintain effective work relationship with all involved.
- Exercise tact, courtesy, and diplomacy in counseling others.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Deal with high stress situations in a calm and tactful manner

Ability to:

- Incorporated within one or more of the previously mentioned performance responsibilities, which are essential functions of this job description, are the following essential physical requirements;

- Mobility sufficient to move about the classroom or designated area to assist with individual or student group sessions.

- Ability to see and hear for the purpose of student assistance in individual and group sessions.
- Ability to bend/twist/kneel/stoop/reach.

Training and Experience:

- Knowledge and experience in counseling techniques.
- Effective skills to communicate both orally and in written form

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT (Work Year): 182 day work year

BARGAINING UNIT: Classified SALARY SCHEDULE: X January 2000
