SUMMARY

This is a senior research scientist position in viral immunology. Research Investigator will be focused on characterizing immune responses at the cellular level. Provide research support for vaccine clinical trials and performs basic research into immune responses generated by candidate vaccine products. She/he/they will work effectively both independently and in conjunction with senior government principal investigators and study collaborators, to perform scientific research and develop or improve vaccines leading to publications and knowledge products; establish and manage relationships with business partners and collaborators leading to studies, projects, and other work; develop, in conjunction with others, grants and proposals; managing laboratory operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following:

  • Scientific Research
    • Functioning as an Immunology Subject Matter Expert.
    • Performing scientific research and development/improvement of vaccines.
    • Designing research studies and developing independent research protocols.
    • Reviewing, approving and analyzing test and associated data.
  • Publishing
    • Presenting data and research plans at partner/collaborator meetings as well as scientific conferences and international meetings.
    • Publishing papers in peer reviewed journals
    • Presenting papers or posters at scientific conferences
    • Reporting on project status and interim findings
  • Grants and Proposals
    • Establishing and managing relationships with business partners and collaborators.
    • Developing, writing, and submitting grant proposals, protocols and manuscripts for clinical and basic immunology research studies.
    • Developing budgets for grants, proposals, and approved protocols.
  • Managing
    • Planning, training, supervising, and overseeing operations within the Immunology Lab.
    • Training and certifying technicians on laboratory procedures and training scientists and technicians on various immunological methods as well as data analysis software and technique.
    • Writing and obtaining approval for Standard Operating Procedures and Study Specific Procedures.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

This position will have supervisory/management authority. Supervise/manage a department and provide input towards hiring/firing/performance decisions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Ph.D. level qualifications in Biology, Immunology, Biomedical Science, or a related field.
  • Must meet all the required credentials and stipulation of practice as described by the WRAIR Clinical Trials.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Expert knowledge and experience of immunology techniques.
  • Blood processing for PMBC isolation and ELISPOT.
  • Coordination of clinical experiments.
  • Performance of flow cytometric-based assays, operation of a flow cytometer, and/or data analysis for multi-parametric flow cytometry.
  • Operation and training in cell sorting using a flow cytometer.
  • Performance of mammalian cell culture.
  • Work in a GLP/GCLP/GMP regulated environment.
  • Performance of assays for cell-mediated immunity.
  • Ability to successfully pass a federal background check and a drug screen
  • Cherokee Federal employees are included as covered employees in U.S. Presidential Executive Order 14042, which mandates Covid vaccines for federal contractors. Executive Order 14042 is currently blocked from enforcement pending court proceedings. Therefore, Cherokee Federal is halting the application of the mandate; however, if the injunction is lifted, Cherokee Federal will restore administration of the vaccine requirement.

Estimated Starting Salary Range: $120,000.00 - $130,000.00 annually

Cherokee Nation Businesses offers discretionary annual incentive pay based upon performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
