The Hazardous Materials Management (HMM) Safety Specialist serves as a general EH&S safety specialist for the Martin Luther King Building located in Oakland. The safety specialist works closely with principal investigators, laboratory supervisors, and other staff working in the MLK Building to ensure compliance with environmental health and safety regulations by providing general guidance to researchers on laboratory safety, injury prevention, ergonomics, and hazardous waste management. The safety specialsit inspects research laboratories for compliance with UCSF safety policies, performs routine testing of emergency showers and eyewashes, certifies chemical fume hoods, and performs radiation surveys. Additionally, the position is responsible for helping oversee the receipt of radioactive materials and DEA controlled substances, picking up hazardous and radioactive waste from laboratories, managing the central waste accumulation areas, and overseeing hazardous, medical, and radioactive waste shipouts from the MLK building for offsite disposal.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description



The Office of Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S) is responsible for promoting environmental stewardship and a safe workplace at UCSF while helping to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to occupational safety and the environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a science related field / or equivalent experience / training
  • One (1) or more years of experience working in an EH&S related field
  • Solid comprehensive working knowledge of the laws and regulations governing occupational and laboratory safety
  • Solid comprehensive working knowledge of the laws and regulations governing hazardous, medical, radioactive, and controlled substance waste management
  • Solid organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in a diverse environment
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s license with a good driving record is required
  • Incumbent is subject to DMV pull notice program

Preferred Qualifications

  • DOT certification for shipping hazardous materials.
  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER

License/Certification
