SCHOOL YEAR: 2023-24

REPORTS TO: HS Principal, HS Assistant Principal

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt/10 month 10 days

PURPOSE: The Dean role provides leadership and direction at the high school level by working proactively to create a thriving school culture based upon Tapestry's core values. This role is essential to collaborate with the team that works closest with the student to provide behavioral interventions and social-emotional learning (SEL) support based upon relationship building, creating a safe and productive environment, maintain clear and accurate records and providing ongoing support to the High School Community using research-based practices that are rooted in restorative justice. In the Dean of Students role you are providing all stakeholders, including parents, teachers and other administrators with classroom/school-wide behavior management strategies and support.

Student Safety, Discipline and Restoration

  • Effectively build and maintain relationships with students, staff, parents, and community stakeholders that establish mutual trust and respect.
  • Develops and cultivates a school wide culture that fosters positive relationships across all levels.
  • Maintain and uphold the Tapestry Code of Conduct, focusing on Restorative Practices that include:
  • Peer mediation
  • Circles
  • Conflict-resolution
  • Restorative questioning
  • De-escalation techniques
  • Affective Statements
  • Reset, Reflect, Repair, Return
  • As delegated by principal, assist in development and management of daily operations, safety, and administrative processes. Adopts and manages processes to safeguard students while on campus.
  • Manages emergency issues in alignment with Tapestry practices while ensuring the learning environment is positive and productive.
  • Participates and trains staff on safety drills, emergency plans, and policy development related to safety.
  • Investigate complaints and in collaboration with the principal determine appropriate remedies.
  • Follow the framework of Restorative Practices while working with students, families and teachers.
  • Design, implement, coordinate and evaluate a comprehensive behavior support program.
  • Provide all stakeholders, including parents, teachers and other administrators with classroom/school-wide behavior management strategies.
  • Hold re-entry meetings.
  • Implement and progress monitor students on behavior contracts.
  • Work with the principal and dean to hold students accountable to our Compass traits and behavioral expectations as outlined in our Code of Conduct in our student handbook.
  • Review PowerSchool behavioral data
  • Start of school/after school supervision
  • Support level 1 discipline as requested by teachers
  • Lead on student support/discipline 9-12 level II
  • Oversee site consequences including detentions and suspensions (9-12).

Culture and Character

  • Oversee student activities including athletics, programs and social activities.
  • Plan and organize extracurricular activities that develop student interpersonal skills and relationships, as needed.
  • Support school-wide initiatives.
  • Support Community Meetings and student celebrations.

Creating a Safe and Productive School Environment

  • Develop structures that provide recognition of a variety of student accomplishments and positive behaviors.
  • Support DASA coordinator with investigations
  • Actively supervise students to ensure a safe, nurturing environment where students can thrive.
  • When needed, offer additional support in the classroom. Supervision schedule can include:
    • Classroom support during instructional time.
    • Cafeteria during assigned grade lunches.
    • Front foyer/outside during and after dismissal (Including Plaza).
    • Hallway supervision including sweeps, monitor first 5 and last 5 minutes of class, and use of passes.
  • Report any immediate social/emotional behaviors that are of concern to the school guidance counselor, social worker and/or Principal.
  • Participate in Climate Team (Principal, Assistant Principal, School Counselors, Dean of Students) Meetings weekly.

Maintain clear and accurate records

  • Accurately reporting behaviors including positive communication as outlined in the High School Code of Conduct. Maintain a record of student progress by logging behavioral interventions into Powerschool and:
  • Maintain a record of student progress through a Check-In/Check Out system for specific students and behaviors.
  • Implement Code of Conduct using behavior tracking systems and communicate with involved staff members.
  • Communicate & document communication with families regarding behavioral, social, attendance & academic data, goals and needs.

Provide ongoing support

  • Work cooperatively with building administrators to:
    • Promote positive student behavior through proactive and strategic moves that target research-based strategies.
    • Modeling of instructional practices to support teachers.
  • Implementation of behavioral supports as aligned to plans.
  • Knowledge and application of the Tapestry Code of Conduct and Behavior Tracking System.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve district, building, departmental and/or grade-level goals.

School-wide duties

  • Assist with arrival, dismissal & lunch duties as assigned.
  • Weekly meeting with the Principal and/or Assistant Principal
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred
  • Candidates with prior teaching and/or experience with youth in an urban school district or district with an urban population are encouraged to apply.
