Health Information Technician Job at Horizon Behavioral Health
Hours: full-time (37.5 hours per week), full benefits with VA VRS retirement included

Position Summary
The Health Information Technician is responsible for the maintenance, filing, retrieval, and destruction of health information documents, including microfilm, paper and EHR documentation. The technician interprets, prepares and responds to Requests for Authorized Protected Health Information. This position works with internal Horizon staff including clinicians, nurses and physicians and external staff including but not limited to clients, responsible parties for clients, lawyers, insurance companies, doctors offices, and other vendors.
Required Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required: Prefer Associates Degree in Business/Medical or Health Information Management, Electronic Health Records or Informatics Certification.
- One year of general office work experience with emphasis on using computer software including Microsoft Office & scanning or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Prefer two years experience working in a medical office setting.
Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Up to date on privacy rules and regulations, HIPAA and State of VA regulations as they pertain to PHI; Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction to meet demands of both internal and external entities for health information records and related client data and reporting. Ability to promote positive, collaborative, and professional working relations among co-workers and external customers at all levels; Knowledge of laws and state regulations, HIPAA, HITECH, Privacy, State Library of Virginia , Library of Virginia regulation, etc. when processing client medical records, as well as current requirements in place within Horizon Behavioral Health policies and procedures; Ability to use of word processing, managing files and records, typing/keyboarding and other office procedures and terminology; Willing and available to work modified schedules (weekends, holiday, etc.) as required; Ability to drive and must possess a valid driver's license. May be required to travel to different Horizon worksites during the day based on operational needs or provide admin support at other locations. Regular attendance at trainings and Horizon meetings may require travel to a variety of Horizon sites.
