The Department of Health & Human Services’ Healthy Greens JC vertical farm program grows local lettuces at ten indoor farms to share with Jersey City members looking to improve their health and wellness. The program provides regular distribution of free leafy greens, nutrition and cooking education, diagnostic testing, and other tools to enhance personal health and empowerment with greater access to healthy food conversation about what it means to eat and live a healthier life.

The Division of Food & Nutrition at the City of Jersey City is looking for a Community Farm Worker who will report to the Health Greens JC project lead. The Community Farm Worker will work at farms at Curries Woods or Marion Gardens public housing sites and engage with resident members, Boys & Girls Club of Hudson County, Head Start, and other community partners to help increase community health. The Community Farm Worker performs various tasks relating to growing leafy greens. This position requires physically working the farm to execute the grow schedule based on membership enrollment and other partnership needs.

Job Duties:

  • Seed, germinate, grow and harvest leafy greens according to set grow schedules
  • Distribute greens to seniors and homebound members within the public house community
  • Assist and facilitate vertical farming workshops, showing residents how the farm works
  • Mentor Boys & Girls Club, Head Start, and other community volunteers to help execute the grow schedule
  • Maintain a clean and sanitized farm, following all farm protocols as outlined in the user manual
  • Log daily farm vitals, data, and photos to the program portal, noting any irregularities and harvest yields
  • Coordinate the speedy delivery of any access harvest to other Division of Food and Nutrition programs across the City with the help of the project lead and other division team members
  • Monitor supply inventory and place seed and supply orders
  • Communicate with the project lead daily to ensure no interruptions in growth and distribution to members.

Preferred Educational Background & Experience: High School Diploma/ GED, minimum one (1) year of related experience

Physical Requirement: Must be able to lift 50lbs

  • Willingness and desire to work in the field to meet the needs of members

Preferred Skills:

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) or (Arabic/English) preferred and not required
  • Experience working with and knowledge of the young families, children, senior citizens, and/or disabled community
  • Strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills
