The Health AI Group Leader in Open Health Solutions (L223) is responsible for leading a multi-disciplinary team while growing expert talent, facilitating high impact contributions to Sponsor and Research projects, and proposing solutions to improve clinical outcomes by leveraging current and emerging artificial intelligence methodologies.
The Health AI capability within this group focuses on accelerating actionable clinical insights through the creation of healthcare community-driven AI frameworks, standards, algorithms, prototypes, services, tools, and data models with health data inputs from electronic health records, clinical and environmental monitoring devices, healthcare knowledgebases, and public health registries, among other health data sources.
The Health AI capability interprets, addresses, and evaluates its products and activities in terms of validity, safety, equity, reliability, cost, and other important dimensions.
This Group Leader position is within MITRE’s L223 Open Health Solutions (OHS) department in MITRE’s Health Innovation Center, L220. In OHS, we prioritize standards-based rapid prototyping and piloting of user-focused software, leaning forward with new technologies, following agile development practices. We systematically share our work through open standards and open-source code. We work in diverse, multi-disciplinary teams collaborating with clinicians, data scientists, software engineers, health policy analysts, user experience designers, and public health experts. We work on a wide variety of projects, with many opportunities to improve different domains in health as well as conduct research to advance digital health innovations.
Key functions of the Health AI Group Leader include, but are not limited to:
General Requirements
- Bring innovation to Health AI to MITRE research and to our sponsors
- Build and support open-source Health AI project communities
- Provide technical leadership within a multi-disciplinary team
- Develop and implement needed Health IT standards
- Manage a multi-disciplinary group of 8 to 11 technical staff
- Analyze health data and systems to create needed AI solutions
Group Leader/Direct Supervisor responsibilities
- Mentor and coach group staff to improve their performance
- Recruit and hire new technical, clinical, and leadership staff and help book them on suitable projects
- Lead Interviews, Reviews, and Performance Improvement Discussions at mid-year, end of year, and as circumstances require
- Leverage your internal social network and corporate knowledge to provide appropriate tasking and opportunities to group staff
Career Development:
- Exhibit understanding of, and commitment to, the line items within the “Growing our Team” component of the MITRE Good Growth Strategy, especially a commitment to retaining and expanding our world class technical breadth and depth
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and guidance for group members to enable improved performance and to assist in career pathways
- Engage in regular CLEAR Conversations with group members to create a positive atmosphere for staff to develop realistic goals that capitalize on their strengths, passions, and evolving interests
- Advocate for group members to identify opportunities for career experiences and developmental opportunities
- Assist staff with issue resolution
- Engage in staffing activities to match projects with staff competencies and identify stretch assignments to develop new skills
- Assist staff with identifying and capturing appropriate training and development opportunities
- Support development of work transition plans and facilitate transitions between projects that meet the needs of projects and group members
- Support the identification and capture of team-based learning opportunities
- Encourage group members to attain professional and technical prominence, including through external publications, conference presentations, and other external opportunities
Performance Management:
- Exhibit understanding of, and commitment to, the relevant line items within the “Growing our Organization” component of the MITRE Good Growth Strategy, especially a commitment to sharing our knowledge for the betterment of the corporation
- Engage in regular discussions with Project Leaders, Tech Leaders, and others in leadership roles about the expectations, performance, and growth opportunities of all Health AI group members
- Seek information and feedback on group members' performance and recommend corrective and development actions when needed
- Identify opportunities to recognize and reward group members' accomplishments.
Quality Management:
- Work with the Department Head and other leadership (e.g., Chief Engineers) and team members to promulgate a culture of quality, excellence, teamwork, staff development, continued learning, innovation, evaluation, and benchmarking to ensure continuous improvement within the department and on all aspects of the department's work program, as well as within the capabilities of the group
- Encourage group members to provide technical reach back to others within their areas of capability and expertise
- On an as-needed basis, serve as technical subject matter expert to review staff work progress and artifacts as part of an enterprise approach to continuous quality improvement
Extended Leadership Team:
- Promulgate all relevant components and aspects of the MITRE Good Growth Strategy to group and department staff, and strive to exhibit these as an example to all
- Assist the Department Head and other GLs in the collaborative process of steering the department, and function as a part of the extended Health Innovation Center (Division L220) Management Team
- Promulgate the vision of the “empowered GL” through interactions with staff, the department, division, and beyond
- Participate in the leadership and management of the department's personnel activities, including identification, recruitment, development, and retention of personnel required to realize the department's mission, strategy, and goals
- Serve as a primary change agent in developing and implementing Department plans, strategies, and programs
- Ensure group members understand the Department and Division strategic direction, priorities, and activities
- Leverage the Group Leader role to support and further the MITRE corporate strategy
Additional Senior Principal Expectations:
- Develop, socialize, and execute a strategic technical roadmap for the establishment of trustworthy Health AI aligned to relevant MITRE investments, strategies, and sponsors (e.g., the MITRE Labs Digital Health Horizon Strategy, MITRE’s A National Strategy for Digital Health, etc.).
- Conceive of, prototype, and advance innovative technical and policy solutions for the most critical current Health AI challenges. This includes, but is not limited to, trustworthy AI deployment, AI algorithm portability, health professional training related to AI applications, etc.
- Collaborate closely – in both strategy development and technology development – with related technical efforts, such as the use of Synthea™ for synthetic data generation, mCODE and cancer moonshot initiatives for cancer data standardization, and efforts for medical device security.
- Leverage existing and newly developed capabilities to establish MITRE as a leader in Health AI testing and certification for use by federal sponsors, healthcare providers, academia, and private sector software solution developers.
- Increase impact across government and the healthcare provider and public health communities through standardization, open-source software publication, transition of solutions, and service offerings, including building collaborative relationships across MITRE, our sponsors, industry, and academia to support these outcomes.
- Develop, apply, and train others in best practices to improve Health AI algorithms and AI solution implementation in an equitable manner across MITRE.
Minimum Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, or a relevant Engineering field.
- 15+ years of experience in the Health Informatics domain.
- Proven technical depth and recognized external technical stature in a breadth of technologies within the Health AI capability area, including open-source projects, commercial products, emerging tools, or research capabilities, etc.
- Track record of technical innovation (research, innovation, etc.) with demonstrable impact.
- Demonstrated ability to define and lead collaborative efforts both within, and across, different organizations and stakeholders (local, sponsor, industry, etc.).
- Experience managing Electronic Health Records (EHR), health insurance claims, informatics research, and software development teams.
- Track record of successful publication in the domain of health informatics, clinical informatics, and/or Health AI.
- Have hands-on knowledge of Health AI algorithms, prototypes, and/or services
- Have experience working collaboratively with experts within Health organizations (e.g., HL7, IHE, VA, ANSI, etc.)
- Have experience working with end-users to determine Health AI requirements
- Have experience working and directing teams of software developers and/or artificial intelligence experts
