The University of Maine at Farmington is seeking a Head Men’s and Women’s Cross-Country Coach/Assistant Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Coach. This position provides leadership for and management of all aspects of the competitive intercollegiate sports. The coach centers the student athlete experience, supports the various identities that student athletes hold, and serves the Department of Athletics staff, the UMF campus, and the greater community consistent with the University's mission and compliant with all applicable laws, University policies, and member organization policies and requirements. The employee must be committed to fostering and supporting the academic and athletic achievement of student athletes, as part of their holistic development. They must foster a culture of trust and respect that values diversity and fosters inclusion and well-being. They must build positive student relationships and meaningful student experiences while demonstrating the utmost professionalism and integrity. Coaches at UMF are teachers in the most dynamic sense. Skill, strategy, and character/leadership development are all part of the curriculum.


This position is a 10-month position. A typical season is from August 15 - June 15.


Essential Duties

  • Assures a positive and purposeful experience for the athletes, assures robust involvement, community engagement, and leadership development opportunities; assure these opportunities address diversity, equity, and engagement priorities.
  • Performs efficient, appropriate, and effective recruitment activities as well as appropriate use of resources and engagement for performance and culture development, resulting in a culture of inclusion, belonging, health, well-being, and academic success through graduation.
  • Conducts high-quality teaching in a humane learning environment.
  • Monitors and promotes the academic and personal growth of student athletes.
  • Coordinates the team strength & conditioning/off-season training programs to minimize injury and maximize safe competitive performance.
  • Develops and manages program’s budget and scheduling within parameters.
  • Operates program in a manner consistent with NCAA bylaws.
  • Develops and manages fund raising.
  • Develops and maintains alumni support for the program.
  • Works collaboratively with assistant coach.
  • Recruits and supervises student workers (manager/other support)
  • Engages in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practice.
  • Provides additional support in the following areas, including but not limited to:
    • Strength and conditioning support
    • Admissions work
    • Out-of-season event management
    • Special events/projects/initiatives

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and three to five years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid State of Maine driver’s license (in good standing, based on UMS standards)
  • Familiarity with Maine (or similar) seasonal conditions
  • Work hours are irregular/extended, including nights and weekends duties

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Intercollegiate coaching experience
  • Effective recruiting experience (effectively using Front Rush or comparable program)
  • Experience participating in intercollegiate cross country and track & field competition.
  • Ability to forecast expenses and manage a budget (revenue, expenses, reports/reconciliation)
  • Experience in effective fundraisers.
  • Experience (education/certification) with strength and conditioning for performance
