Job Description:


The Research and Information Services Department of the North Central Council of Governments (NCTCOG) seeks a temporary GIS Technician to assist in the development and quality control of various GIS layers. These data layers are used by staff within the agency as well as staff at local governments, businesses, and non-profits organizations in decision-making and planning activities. This position requires an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, or a related scientific or technical field and requires someone who can stay focused for long periods of time with repetitive tasks and with limited supervision. At least 80% of the time will be spent editing in ArcGIS.

This is a benefits-eligible, temporary, full-time position. The minimum duration of the position could extend to approximately 1 year, contingent upon funding availability and other factors. Based on performance and business requirements, flexible scheduling or remote work opportunities may be available.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Data collection and tracking
  • Development of new data layers
  • Editing of existing data layers
  • Data conversion and standardization
  • Performance of quality control and quality assurance procedures
  • Preparation of maps to given specifications

Required Skills:

  • Intermediate knowledge of ArcGIS Desktop 10.8.1 or ArcGIS Pro 2.9 or newer
  • Experience in ArcGIS editing environment as well as geoprocessing tools
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Good working knowledge Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access
  • Good critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, and able to multi-task
  • Able to work independently and in a team environment
  • Able to make decisions
  • Able to follow instructions and take direction

Desired Skills:

  • Good working knowledge of File and Personal geodatabases
  • Good working knowledge of basic tools within ArcToolbox
  • Knowledge of GIS data formats and conversions
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS extension: Spatial Analyst
  • Familiarity with SQL
  • Familiarity with demographic data
  • Familiarity with parcel data

Required Experience:

This position requires up to one year of continuous, hands-on experience developing and editing data layers using ArcGIS and an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university. Candidates with significant, related experience and formal education in a non-technical field might also be considered.

Salary range:

$39,950 - $41,750, depending on qualifications and experience
