Work carried out will support R&D and decision-maker support activities within the NREL geothermal program using analysis methodologies such as geologic/geophysical/geochemical data processing and modeling, geothermal resource assessment, geospatial analysis, subsurface characterization, geospatial analysis. The successful candidate will perform engineering/economic analyses of geothermal systems in cooperation with research community to gather and understand field data.
The candidate will be responsible for characterization of a variety of subsurface environments, and integration of results into decision science and analysis for geothermal energy development. Subsurface environments range from conventional geothermal reservoirs (hydrothermal systems) to unconventional reservoirs (such as petrothermal reservoirs targeted by Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) and other emerging technologies), to shallower reservoirs for ground-source heat pumps and thermal energy storage. The successful candidate will integrate subsurface simulations with surface simulations for energy applications such as power generation, district heating and cooling systems, and hybrid energy systems.
Responsibilities include thorough and clear documentation of work in detailed technical records for internal communication and external publication, maintaining a clean and safe work space, and conducting work with integrity and the highest professional standards. Additional general responsibilities include:
  • Conducting objective research on geothermal technologies that generates independent, high quality, and reproducible results.
  • Mentor junior staff in the design, implementation, and reporting of research projects.
  • Participating with senior staff to conceive and propose new research concepts and projects related to geothermal energy
  • Analyzing data related to geothermal exploration, geothermal resource characterization, and geothermal utilization and markets.
  • Developing, managing, and ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of collaborative relationships.
  • Coordinating within NREL, and with clients and other key organizations to assure research is conducted in accordance with contractual agreements and meets the needs of the intended audience.
  • Developing tools and models that distinguish NREL's analyses and enhances the value they bring in guiding research, investment, and policy decisions.
