GARDENER

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, to perform skilled and semi-skilled grounds maintenance and gardening work; and to do related work as required. JOB CHARACTERISTICS: Assigned to District gardener crews or assigned to a specific school as a resident gardener. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Plants, cultivates, waters, sprays and propagates ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees and flowers; plants, fertilizes, waters, and cares for lawns, using hand and power cutting and edging equipment; prepares and treats soil for planting, spades, and fertilizes flower beds, and sets out plants; assists in keeping planted areas free from pests and plant diseases; uses hand and power clippers in pruning trees, hedges, and shrubs; rakes leaves, pulls weeds, and performs general grounds maintenance work; assists in installing and repairing sprinkler systems; operates small tractor and gas powered rototillers in preparing soils for planting; sweeps walks and picks up rubbish on grounds; keeps hoses, supplies tools, and equipment in proper condition and repair; fills and levels playground areas and athletic fields; may operate light truck in traveling to and from work locations. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of:  The principals and methods of ornamental gardening and grounds maintenance;  The tools, materials, and standard practices of the gardening trade;  The more common plant diseases and insect pests and the approved methods and materials in controlling and eradicating them;  Plants, their characteristics and adaptability to various weather and soil conditions;  Proper preparation and fertilization of various types of soil. Ability to:  Perform skilled gardening and grounds keeping work;  Use skillfully and safely the hand and powered tools of the gardening trade;  Perform heavy manual labor;  Follow verbal and written directions. Experience:  One year of experience in professional gardening work. Education:  High school education or equivalent in training and experience. License:  Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
