This is an entry level classification. Under direct supervision, performs semiskilled work in servicing and maintaining fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment; and performs other work as required.
The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of those positions in this class. They are descriptive, not limiting.
Essential Duties:
Carries out periodic routine maintenance in accordance with prescribed schedules.
Refuels, checks, greases and lubricates a variety of fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment.
Checks and services batteries, and checks and repairs tires; inspects fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment for external damage and for mechanical defects.
Performs maintenance work on fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment.
Fits brooms for road sweepers.
Makes routine inspections of fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment.
Carries out minor repairs and replaces components as necessary.
Drives fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment as required.
Deals with inquiries from the public and City Departments/divisions regarding emergencies and other issues.
Washes and cleans fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment and work areas.
Maintains servicing equipment in good order.
Keeps records of quantities used and maintains stocks of a variety of fuels and oils.
Training and Experience:
One year experience in the servicing of fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment or related experience.
Knowledge of:
mechanical parts of a variety of fleet vehicles and construction and municipal service equipment; servicing, greasing and lubrication requirements of a variety of fleet vehicles and construction and municipal service equipment.
Ability to:
read and write at a level for successful job performance; inspect a variety of fleet vehicles and construction and municipal service equipment; make minor repairs and report defects; drive vehicles of the type serviced; work with a minimum of supervision; keep maintenance records.
Skill in:
lubricating and greasing of fleet vehicles and construction and municipal service equipment; tire repairs and equipment washing.
Licenses or Certificates:
Possession of a valid Class "C" California driver's license is required. A Class "B" California driver's license must be obtained prior to the expiration of the six month probationary period. May require certain State license certifications as needed to perform job duties (i.e. Hazmat).
Physical Conditions or Special Working Conditions:
Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and remove or install parts weighing up to 80 pounds. Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and to work in confined areas and from heights and with exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions.
Fleet Service Worker I is the entry level class in the Fleet Service Worker series. Under direct supervision incumbents learn and perform a variety of semiskilled duties in the servicing and maintenance of fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment.

1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.
VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)
HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.
SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.
ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.
