GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The position of Group Fitness Instructor is a part-time position with responsibilities at the Sumter Family YMCA. Primary duty is, but not limited to conducting fitness classes. Under the direction of the Healthy Living Director and consistent with the Christian mission, the Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values are conveyed through program excellence, retention and increased enrollment.
PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES:
- Lead Silver Sneakers class and/or other fitness-related classes.
- Set up and takes down equipment before/after class.
- Report any equipment problems/malfunctions to Health & Wellness team.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Ensure safe and effective workouts. Report any accidents or injuries to Wellness Director or Executive Director.
- Ability to set up, move and store class equipment.
- Communicate effectively between members and Fitness Supervisor.
- Enforce management policies. I.e. cell phones, clothing, etc.
- Ensure the members are in a safe environment by continuously scanning the area and making necessary adjustments.
- Risk Management trained.
- Respond to participant feedback and requests for information.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by, Healthily Living Director, Executive Director or CEO.
Know-How:
- Minimum of High School diploma
- Excellent public speaking and presentation skills
- Ability to connect with others
- Committed to the mission of serving all
- Ability to perform several tasks concurrently, time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain confidential information
- Must be Personal Trainer or Group Exercise Certified
- Working knowledge of exercise equipment
- Must be CPR/AED certified
- Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Must be able to take initiative in making decisions and solving problems in the areas of assigned responsibilities.
- Ability to represent the YMCA in a mature and professional manner.
- Ability to work efficiently independently and as part of a team.
- Display a personal commitment to consistent quality customer service.
ABILITY TO:
- Set an example for the participants by displaying mission for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with members, staff, and others contacted in the course of the work.
- Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
Physical Requirements:
- Sight, Hearing and Speaking
- Standing, Walking, Stooping, Kneeling, Squatting, Climbing, Sitting
- Lifting and carrying a minimum of 50 lbs.
- Work nature conducive of repetitive physical demonstration, administrative and dissimilar operative.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Silver Sneakers Certification
- Nationally Certified Group Fitness Certification (ACE, AFTA, IFTA, NETA)
- CPR/AED Certified (adult and child)
- Completion of required on-line courses within 2 weeks of employment

- Teaching: 1 year (Preferred)
