We are seeking a Environmental Health & Safety Specialist who is passionate about safety!

In this role you will:

  • Coordinate all the aspects of the safety, environmental and worker compensation for the Spartanburg facility. This will include the development, implementation, and maintenance of EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) programs designed to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control workplace EHS hazards at the Spartanburg facility.
  • Provide assistance to all areas to achieve compliance with regulatory agencies in order to minimize EHS hazards while promoting a safe, healthy and sustainable work environment.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Coordinate EHS compliance; maintain a comprehensive understanding of corporate policies and government regulations.
  • Coordinate/conduct and document EHS training programs. This includes EHS orientation for all new/transfer associates. Review and revise as needed.
  • Lead the implementation of the the elements outlined in the Kohler Safety Management System (KSMS) and Kohler Environmental Management System (KEMS) within the operation, driving continued progression toward achievement of elevated tier status for the facility.
  • Coordinate training and communication activities to build management and employee understanding of and commitment to EHS compliance and goals; including hazard communication, powered industrial vehicle, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, SPCC and SWPPP.
  • Maintain and coordinate records for EHS events and training.
  • Manage activities of the safety committee and safety teams, EHS audits, accident investigations, ergonomic improvement projects, workers compensation case management, oversee the light duty program, emergency response planning, air, water and waste programs.
  • Act as medical case manager and return to work coordinator for all Worker Compensation cases. Maintain awareness of return to work and light duty programs within K&B Operations business. Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the effects of hazardous conditions and unsafe acts on associates.
  • Plan, implement and monitor accident prevention and loss control programs to minimize injuries, and the costs associated with those injuries. Conduct incident/accident investigations to identify root causes and to identify opportunities for accident prevention.
  • Champion on-going ergonomic improvement projects. Provide project management related to ergonomic improvements, workstation layout, and improvement of potential risk.
  • Oversee the chemical safety in the workplace including coordinating annual chemical inventory listings and maintenance of SDS database and disposal of outdated or no longer used chemicals.
  • Compile monthly EHS reports, including analysis of incidents, injuries and illness including but not limited to frequency, causation, severity and costs and ensure data is properly entered and maintained in the Kohler EHS electronic management system.
  • Ensure required emergency response planning has been conducted and implemented.
  • Obtain and distribute safety related promotional material (i.e. posters, mailings) within the plant.
  • Coordinate the first-aid management, including responsibilities, training, and records.
  • Lead and/or facilitate EHS Awareness Programs, EHS events and Safety Committee. Acts as team member/co-leader and liaison for the Spartanburg plant with Kohler environmental and sustainability initiatives. Coordinate the requirements, reporting, testing and disposal of identified hazardous materials.
  • Other duties as assigned including participation and facilitation of Kaizen events.

Skills/Requirements

  • 3-5 years of experience managing combined Environmental Health and Safety programs in an industrial setting
  • Four year degree in a safety/health/environment related field
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Environmental Professional (CEP), or OSHA practitioner diploma
  • Strong planning, organizational, problem solving, communication, and relationship building skills are essential


Experience and/or education in the following are considered assets:

  • First aid/CPR
  • Certified Forklift Safety/ Instructor
  • Transportation of Hazardous goods
