Class Summary

Under close supervision, performs work of routine difficulty involving beginning level field work assisting in engineering survey tasks of a limited technical nature as a member of a survey crew; performs beginning level office work; assists in the performance of various material tests; assists in preparation of planning of traffic surveys; conducts routine inspections of a non-professional nature; incumbents may be assigned in either office or field locations; work is carried out under the supervision of an engineer and is reviewed by continuous check and observation; performs other work as required.

Representative Duties

Acts as rod man and chainman in a survey party; uses level instruments; takes readings; uses transit for straight lines; locates monuments; sets up line stakes for construction projects; sets grade stakes for elevations; assists in taking elevations and drawing profiles; makes routine inspections of minor construction and maintenance work such as public utility patches; cleans and repairs survey equipment; makes simple engineering computations; prepares material samples and assists in testing; takes field information and assists in compiling office data for planning or traffic surveys; makes simple computations; indexes and files parcel maps, tract maps, improvement plans, and field books; prepares and updates ward and precinct maps and other City maps.

Minimum Qualifications

Training and Experience:
Graduation from a standard high school; some experience in the use of survey instruments and equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the capabilities to perform the described duties.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Some knowledge of the methods and techniques of engineering surveying; some knowledge of civil engineering procedures.

Ability to use, clean, repair, and maintain survey instruments and equipment; ability to carry out routine inspections of minor construction work; ability to make simple mathematical computations.

Licenses or Certificates:
Possession of a valid Class 3 California driver's license.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is an entry level in Engineering Aide II/I flexible series and is differentiated from the II level by its trainee nature requiring close direct supervision. Employees with one year of experience in engineering survey work or equivalent are eligible for promotion to the II level. Promotions to Engineering Aide II are considered on a merit basis subject to recommendation by the Department Head and approval by the Director of Personnel.

VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.

VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)

HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.

SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.
