Engineer: Transmission & Distribution Planning I/II/III/Senior - Hybrid Job at ALLETE

This position may be considered for a hybrid work arrangement based on ALLETE’s needs. A Hybrid work arrangement means the employees position will be a blend of work performed both in-person and at an offsite location such as an employee's home office. This position will report to a Duluth, MN office.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitate comprehensive, coordinated, and transparent planning of Minnesota Power’s transmission & distribution systems in order to provide reliable and economic service to customers while navigating a rapidly evolving utility landscape
- Contribute to developing the grid of the future through analysis and planning of grid modernization programs such as feeder automation, non-wire alternatives analysis, distribution hosting capacity analysis, and distributed energy resource (DER) interconnection studies
- Perform transmission & distribution studies to evaluate current and future system needs and develop solutions that support the rapidly-changing ways in which electricity is being produced and consumed, modernize aging infrastructure, and implement new and emerging technology
- Prepare formal planning reports and project scope documentation
- Facilitate collaborative development of major transmission & distribution projects with a cross-functional team of internal stakeholders to ensure successful and coordinated project outcomes
- Coordinate transmission & distribution system modifications with external entities (other utilities, customers, regulatory bodies and the general public)
- Provide ongoing technical support for internal and external stakeholders for project planning, development, and implementation, as well as any required regulatory filings
- Research new technology for potential corporate application to support grid modernization, improved reliability, and the integration of distributed resources
- Successful candidates will have demonstrated ability to work independently, creatively solve problems, and show strong interpersonal and communication skills
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering is required
- Candidates completing their degree by June 30, 2023 will be considered.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Job classification is dependent upon the level of job related experience
A Master's degree in engineering may be equivalent for up to one year of related experience
Engineer I: No experience required
Engineer II: Four years or more related engineering experience -OR- Two years of related engineering experience PLUS certification as an Engineer-in-Training.
Engineer III: Four years or more of related engineering experience PLUS a Professional Engineer license, AND must be able to become registered as a Professional Engineer in MN, WI, and ND within 6 months
Engineer Senior: Eight years or more of related engineering experience PLUS a Professional Engineer license AND must be able to become registered as a Professional Engineer in MN, WI, and ND within 6 months
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
- Requires high level of interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships.
- Candidates with related utility experience, such as electric utility engineering internship experience, are desired
- Certification as an engineer in training (passed the FE exam) is desired
- Must possess a basic understanding of industrial processes and process instrumentation.
- This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match and/or aptitude.
