The Opportunity.

The Engagement Coordinator (ESM) for Martha’s Vineyard will be responsible for infusing events, tours, programs, and visitor experience with vitality, vibrancy, and creativity. The position requires innovative approaches to develop the Martha’s Vineyard sites where all features are used to their fullest potential to engage visitors in the history and beauty of the properties and in the conservation, recreational and cultural work of The Trustees.


Key Responsibilities:

The Engagement Coordinator is a full-time position based in Vineyard Haven, MA. This position is responsible for the public experience on Martha’s Vineyard; events, programs, tours, interpretive & self-guided experiences, and visitor amenities. Working closely with a wide range of departments including Visitor Interpretation, Marketing, and Program Leadership, and Stewardship, the Engagement Coordinator will increase visitation, grow program participation and revenue, and improve visitor satisfaction through the development of new experiences and improved amenities. The Engagement Coordinator reports to the Islands Portfolio Director. This position is responsible for hiring and managing seasonal tour guides for greater seasonal program and engagement offerings.


Specifically, the Engagement Site Manager’s responsibilities can be categorized into the following themes:

1. Enhance the Visitor Experience:

  • Provide outstanding customer service to visitors at all times.

  • Develop and implement self-guided experiences, specialized tours, activities, and interpretive materials for visitors.

  • Create, with the support of Program Leadership, exciting and diverse engagement activities and programs that connect visitors and members to The Trustees exceptional places and each other.

  • Manage all aspects of the visitor experience at entry, circulation, and exit.

  • Support and manage The Trustees Island volunteers and local volunteer programs such as the Martha’s Vineyard Annual Beach Clean Up, the Courtesy Patrol, and Beach Profile Volunteers.


2. Grow Visitation and Program Participation:

  • Work with the Islands Operation Assistant and Stewardship to support retail sales at our coastal properties and the Vineyard Haven Office.

  • Work closely with the Marketing team to increase web, print, and social media promotions of Martha’s Vineyard as a destination for multiple audiences.

  • Build upon current relationships and develop new partnerships to expand outreach and awareness of the sites on Martha’s Vineyard.

  • Connect more Martha’s Vineyard visitors through the development of visitor promotions and Massachusetts tourism.


3.
Implement New Events and Programs:

  • Assess and adapt tour programs to provide memorable and distinctly unique tour experiences.

  • Infuse current events and programs with innovative activities.

  • Increase program and event revenue.

  • Support all Trustees events on Martha’s Vineyard through budget management, on-site support, and evaluation.

  • Develop program satisfaction surveys.


Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have energy, enthusiasm, an excellent attitude, and a willingness to work hard. The Engagement Coordinator will be a people-person who is passionate in connecting people to nature and the outdoors and is dedicated to providing every visitor a remarkable experience with The Trustees.


Additional qualifications include

  • 2-4 years of progressively responsible experience in visitor engagement, education, interpretation, and/or sales/customer service in a non-profit or for-profit setting.

  • B.A. in related field and a minimum of three years as a manager or supervisor of staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage many deadlines, projects, and relationships.

  • Strong understanding of education and visitor engagement best practices.

  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to manage relationships across geographic distances.

  • Demonstrated experience in oral communication, presentations, persuasive writing, and training staff.

  • Strong analytic and organizational skills; ability to manage projects and workflow, using time and resources effectively.

  • High regard for teamwork, collegiality, customer service and visitor experience.


Other Requirements:

  • A valid driver’s license, as well as a satisfactory driving record as outlined in The Trustees’ driving policy.

  • A satisfactory criminal background check (CORI).

  • Willing to travel within Massachusetts using a personal vehicle.

  • Able to work a consistent seasonal schedule which will include one weekend day from approximately May to October.

  • Able to work some evenings as required, attending all signature events.

  • The ability to lift 40lbs independently and spend periods of time standing during events.


Hours, Salary & Schedule:

Salary is commensurate with experience. The Engagement Site Manager is a full-time, year round, exempt position. As a full time employee, the is eligible for benefits offered by The Trustees, including: medical insurance, dental insurance, disability and life insurance, vacation, sick, and personal time, and the option to participate in our 401(k) plan.
