As an Energy Analyst Lead, this position reports to the Director of Structuring and Analysis (Commercial) and will perform power modeling, forecasting, analysis, and reporting in support of LCRA’s wholesale electric market business operations. The Energy Analyst Lead provides financial, economic, and statistical analysis related to wholesale power expenses, pricing, settlement, structuring, and/or risk. This position requires specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise in interpreting and recommending best practices. The Lead is self-motivated, works and thinks independently, to foster innovative solutions to complex situations. Progression to this level is limited based on business requirements and may lead functional teams or projects.
You will be trusted to:
- Provides direct planning and analytical support for the development of electric power supply strategies, evaluation and analysis of generation assets, and power purchase and sale contracts.
- Performs quantitative analysis and modeling including advanced financial, economic, and statistical analysis relating to the impacts of fuel, purchased power activities, and other wholesale market activities.
- Analyzes power sales and purchase contracts and their potential benefits and risks to LCRA's wholesale portfolio.
- Develops and maintains complex economic evaluation and cash flow simulation models for fuel supplies, power generation, purchased power and load costs.
- Analyzes data from natural gas, coal and electrical power generation markets and formulates statistics to draw meaningful conclusions.
- Assesses transactions for value, commodity and non-commodity risks, capital requirements, cash flows, physical optionality, and strategic benefits.
- Manages complex contractual requirements for pricing, cost allocation, rates and reconciliation.
- Provides complex analysis to enable contract strategies that help retain customers and positions LCRA to compete in de-regulated markets.
- Advises management on short-term issues affecting LCRA's long-term electric generation resource outlook, rates and strategy.
- Develops and deploys databases for research and information.
- Ensures quality assurance and quality control of data and documentation.
- Identifies and corrects errors in complex mathematical calculations performed by various software tools used.
- Understands and implements complex ERCOT protocols related to ERCOT settlement, scheduling and dispute resolution.
- Plans, compiles and analyses budgets, develops financial projections and administers related budgetary programs and controls for wholesale power expenses and revenues
- Prepares variance report of actual financial results (monthly, quarterly and fiscal period) to comparable budget data by process/activity on a departmental and rate basis.
- Prior experience and/or knowledge of power plant best practices when developing new processes and metrics.
- Familiarity with energy transition practices, fuel source variabilities, and renewable power dynamics.
- Provides training and develops training materials for new and established software.

You qualify with:
- Twelve or more years' experience in energy analytics.
- A degree(s) in business, economics, engineering, mathematics or a relevant field may be substituted per LCRA guidelines for certain years of experience.

- Knowledge of economic and financial forecasting
- Knowledge of electric generation simulation modeling in a deregulated market
- Knowledge of the utility industry and electric market operations
- Knowledge of accounting principles and practices
- Knowledge of database design and management
- Knowledge of financial instruments such as derivatives and options
- Skill in developing and maintaining effective customer and counter party relationships
- Skill in analyzing and solving problems
- Skill in verbal and written communication
- Skill in negotiation
- Skill in articulating complex, technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Intermediate skill level in office productivity applications (such as email, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.)
- Ability to identify and measure risks associated with fuel, energy and transmission issues
- Ability to develop or work with statistical forecasting models
- Ability to identify problems and solutions that deliver outstanding customer service
- Preferred knowledge or trainability in PowerWorld, UPlan, and/or other power flow software modeling.
- Preferred knowledge of working with large datasets and/or basic programming knowledge such as Python or R.
