Class Summary

Under general supervision, performs skilled journey-level work in maintaining, repairing and installing electrical equipment; reads and understands electrical blueprints; makes electrical installation decisions; operates heavy equipment such as 50 ft. aerial lift truck and hydro-crane; uses electrical tools and instruments; inspects street light installations; and performs other work as required.

Representative Duties

The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this classification. They are descriptive, not limiting.

Essential Duties:
Maintains lighting in streets, parks, and other City-owned buildings; works with light and heavy equipment; drives and operates an aerial lift truck, 50 ft. aerial lift truck, hydro-crane for pole setting and removing, or a three-quarter (3/4) ton pick-up; uses instruments to test and troubleshoot electric circuits interprets drawings to determine the operations of electrical equipment such as storm pumping stations, gate and door operators, steam cleaners, fleet washing systems, and crane operators; installs cable for telephones, computers and other signaling devices; and installs house wiring circuits in new facilities and facilities that are being remodeled; uses hydraulic benders for fitting conduits; operates a jack hammer for the removal of concrete.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:
Practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment of the electrical trade; National Electrical Code; and safe work methods and safety regulations related to the work; and sprinkler clock circuits and water pumping motor circuits.

Ability to:
Exercise independent judgement and initiative within established guidelines; install, maintain and repair electrical devices; drive and operate equipment requiring a Class "B" driver's license such as a 50ft. aerial lift truck and hydro crane; and establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Skill in:
the use and care of tools and equipment of the electrical trade; and locating and adjusting defects in electrical systems and equipment.
Training and Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent and one year of journey-level experience in electrical installation, maintenance or repair work of public or commercial facilities, or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the capabilities to perform the described duties.

Licenses, Certificates and Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid Class "C" California driver's license. A Class "B" California driver's license without airbrake restriction must be obtained within the six-month probationary period. Must be able to pass color vision test.

Physical Conditions or Special Working Conditions:
Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and remove objects weighing up to 90 pounds, depending on the job assignment. Must be willing to work indoors or outdoors in all weather conditions and to work in confined areas and from heights and with exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions. May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This class is a journey-level class. Incumbents are assigned basic electrical installations, repairs and inspections. This class is distinguished from Electrical Technician II in that the II performs the full range of assigned duties and assists in the orientation and training of the lower level class.

Promotion to Electrical Technician II:
Promotion to Electrical Technician II is made on a merit basis, without examination, subject to recommendation by the Department Head, verification by the Human Resources Manager that qualifications as approved by the Miscellaneous Civil Service Commission are met; and approval by the City Manager. Under normal conditions, an employee will be considered for promotion one year following appointment to the fifth salary step and upon meeting the minimum qualifications for Electrical Technician II.

VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.

VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)

HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.

SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.
