Description/Job Summary
Lindahl Reed is hiring an Ecologist to support the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), Fisheries and Ecological Services Division in Region 7, Alaska. The candidate with support a diverse group of programs including fisheries, conservation genetics, marine mammals, and the endangered species recovery program as a data technician. This position will assist a Data Manager in training staff in data management best practices (e.g., preparing data products in machine-readable, non-proprietary formats or writing data dictionaries), assisting staff in developing data management plans and reviewing plans for completeness and accuracy, and writing archival-quality metadata records for data products. In collaboration with the Division’s Data Manager, a primary goal of the position will be to populate the Regional Data Repository with project and product metadata records, compliant with existing Department of Interior data standards, and the associated data products. The work will involve group and individual interactions with all staff in the division. Through this work, the candidate will be exposed to the wide array of natural resource management projects underway in the division and provide a valuable service in data management.

Position Responsibilities

  • Provides support for staff developing data management plans for their projects.
  • Assists in file organization, file format conversion, data QA/QC, writing data dictionaries and the implementation of other best practices for data management.
  • Creates metadata records in mdEditor (www.mdeditor.org) using regional guidance.
  • Participates as a member of the Alaska Data Stewardship Team.
  • Champions the strategic value of quality data and influences others to adopt a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Works effectively with a variety of people in a diverse workforce and communicates clearly and consistently

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife management, natural resource management, environmental science, or related field.
  • Demonstrated skill in managing data products generated from field biology projects.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and presentation skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail in managing data products.
  • Ability to work in a team–oriented environment.
  • Strong organizational skills, particularly in terms of file management.
  • Working knowledge of standard office computer software (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Candidate must be a US Citizen or Green Card Holder.
  • Ability to pass a government-administered background investigation in order to be granted access to government IT systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and/or experience in writing metadata is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of reproducible data manipulation skills using R is highly desirable.
