Major Functions
The County of Volusia is seeking Special Workers for the Mosquito Control Division. These positions are located in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and will be responsible for: driving a pickup truck with an Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) spray system at night. This work requires night time availability during the mosquito season between the hours of 6:00 pm and midnight. Additional day time hours may be available based on operational need. Candidates must be able to work with pesticides. Duties include the application of chemical and biological pesticides; performing surveillance (setting and collecting mosquito traps); gathering data and inputting information; and interacting with people in the community while performing service related requests with experienced staff.
***This is a Temporary Position contingent to the need for services. The selected candidate will not be eligible for county-offered benefits**
Illustrative Duties

- Utilize a Volusia County vehicle during assigned work hours.
- Drives ULV truck after sunset and before sunrise to control adult mosquitoes.
- Performs mosquito population surveys in the field or in a laboratory setting.
- Collects data electronically as required, manages data input utilizing a laptop or desktop computer as required.
- May be assigned to perform house inspections with a team and/or supervisor in the community.
- May be assigned to set and pickup mosquito traps.
- Responsible for storage and transportation of mosquito collections to the mosquito control laboratory.
- May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
- Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
- Responds to emergency situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
- Must be able to use a computer and other electronic devices.
- Must be able to obtain a Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Public Health Pest Control license within four (4) months of hire.
- Experience working with pesticides is a plus!

ADA REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demands: Medium work. Ability to traverse undeveloped, uneven, wet, broken terrain, wooded, marshy areas. Ability to see, talk, hear, reach, walk, bend, squat, kneel, grasp. Peripheral vision. Able to lift (40 lbs.). Visual acuity (peripheral vision and depth perception) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle.
Environmental Demands: Inside and outside work. Ability to tolerate inclement weather including rain, humidity, heat, and cold. Potential exposure to saltwater, chemicals, insects, toxic plants, snakes, salt air, mud, dust, confined spaces and poor ventilation.
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend manuals; instructions, procedures, memos, letters. Ability to perform shop math. Ability to speak clearly and concisely to public and laymen. Ability to write: summaries, instructions, procedures and required documentation.
