Summary
Responsible for the organization, administration, supervision in the area of the school
district transportation system in accordance with state law and policies along with school district
Policies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties may be assigned.
- Organizes and implements a pupil transportation system in compliance with the policies of the
Board of Education.
- Oversees the acquisition and implementation of transportation program software.
- Approves bus stops in as safe a location as possible.
- Approves transportation for field trips and athletic trips.
- Recruits, interviews, checks background and hires bus drivers, substitutes, and aides in coordination with the district office.
- Oversees the evaluation of transportation staff.
- Periodically checks the driving records of all bus drivers in order to assure student safety.
- Coordinates the professional development program for school bus drivers.
- Maintains personnel records.
- Keeps records for preparation of state and local reports such as inventories, pupils transported,
route mileage, time records, special trip records, traffic accidents, and other required reports.
- Develops and communicates transportation procedures and regulations to schools, the public,
and transportation staff.
- Makes recommendations that may improve transportation services and efficiency such as
routing, rules, and regulations for drivers and pupil conduct.
- Is responsible for department public relations and addressing patron or employee concerns.
- Communicates regularly with various internal and external publics to develop and maintain a
positive school/community relationship.
- Coordinates bus discipline with building principals.
- Maintains reports in relation to the transportation department such as ridership, fuel consumption, miles driven.
- Monitors weather and road conditions, makes recommendations to the Superintendent on school closure and delays.
- Conducts safety inspections and accident investigations to create a safe environment for students and staff.
- Develops and ensures implementation of pre- and post-trip inspection procedures and maintenance reporting routines.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages a staff of assistant supervisors, dispatchers, bus mentors, bus drivers, substitute drivers, and
aides. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these employees.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable
laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and
directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints
and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelors degree in transportation or related field preferred; experience in general transportation operations.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, patrons, or employees of the district.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Basic technology skills. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
