Qualifications:

General Statement of Duties: The Director of Nursing (DON) will provide nursing care for consumers and training for staff to address the unique needs of all consumers served in Enable’s programs. This position requires a high degree of professionalism that conveys to staff the importance of providing quality services in a timely, caring and supportive manner. Modeling this approach, consultations and training will be done in a manner that empowers direct care staff and LPNs to conduct their work in a like manner. The DON will act as a liaison with outside healthcare providers who provide services to Enable consumers and oversee contracts of health-related entities. The DON will also supervise other nurses employed and/or contracted by Enable.

Essential Job Functions:

Provides Quality Services

Routinely reviews and remains knowledgeable about each consumer’s health. Takes an active role in assessing the needs and care of consumers with any special health requirements, including but not limited to specified laboratory data, past and current medications and identifying and possibly scheduling specialist appointments when necessary.

Identifies, coordinates and monitors the health care of the consumers, especially those with complex medical needs.

Assures that information provided by medical professionals is communicated to staff and understood by them. Advises and trains staff as needed.

Acts as a resource to staff and consumers in all areas of health care including but not limited to medication and possible side effects, injuries, and prevention (flu shots, vaccinations, regular health check-ups, etc.) Acts as liaison for consumer and supports staff with health care professionals. Accompanies consumers to important appointments—those that could benefit from a nursing perspective—as schedule permits. Oversees services provided by outside contractors related to health care. Advises staff on the consumers’ health care coverage and access to health care.

Provides direct nursing care to consumers, as appropriate, providing assistance particularly in the areas that require skilled nursing care.

May participate in conducting audits of medication records, reviewing medication procedures of a program site or for in home care and ensuring staff complies with guidelines. Works with Enable program management to ensure all medications are received in a timely manner.

Acts as a member of a team addressing significant behavioral and/or medical changes in consumers.

Maintains confidentiality with storage of records, medications and consumer communications.

Checks in medications, reviews for accuracy again prescriptions, may modify MARS, if needed, and ensures timely distribution of medications to program locations. Acts as the liaison with the pharmacy vendor to resolves any issues.

Acts as the health advocate to resolve issues of medication and insurance coverage.

Ensures Quality and Compliance Standards are Met

Reviews and updates Enable’s policies and procedures relating to medical care.

Enters data in timely manner to all electronic records required by Enable and/or DDD or other funding sources; ensures all supervisees do so as well.

Assists with planning, coordinating and/or training employees in medical care and procedures needed to provide excellent direct care. Provide training to help employees obtain and/or maintain certifications. Topics for training include (but are not limited to): acquiring proper medical care, frequency of medical appointments, documentation of appointments, follow up health care, medication management, epilepsy, Hepatitis B, universal precautions, warning signs of illness and disease, exercise, personal care, colostomy care, lifting and transferring, nutrition, menu preparation, feeding, and special diets.

Provides training at New Hire Orientation as required and maintains the curriculum of the topics presented to assure it remains current and relevant.

Remains current on relevant trends, service delivery requirements, and strategic issues and recommends strategies for improvement or changes that will keep services at the highest quality.

Ensures service records are properly maintained, including documentation of all interactions with individual consumers, and reports are prepared and submitted on time, including, but not limited to, time and attendance, electronic case records, and daily transaction records.

Works cooperatively with management to identify health care needs in all service delivery areas.

Provides Supervision

Hires, trains, supervises and monitors staff in the performance of their responsibilities.

Acknowledges staff and expresses their value to Enable, deepening the commitment of staff to Enable.

Approval and timely submission of timesheets for direct reports on a bi-weekly basis.

Provides guidance, mentoring, training and help with problem solving.

Conducts regularly scheduled supervision.

Ensures staff meets annual program goals and individual performance goals.

Ensures new staff receives on-the-job orientation and training.

Ensures staff attend mandatory and, contingent upon available funds, professional development elective trainings.

Available after normal business hours Monday – Friday or on weekends in the event of an emergency or need for clinical decisions or input.

If overseeing the work of a nurse under contract, ensures the nurse provides quality work, submits reports in timely manner, meets targets without exceeding budgetary limitations, and makes sure a signed contract is in place appropriate to the scope of the work.

May supervise nurse interns.

Other Responsibilities

Under supervision with Senior Management coordinates the agency response to all health emergencies. Remains current on all Department of Health directives regarding such emergencies. Will report to Senior Management recommendations to address matters related to the emergency up to and including developing policy & procedures, educational tools and developing and conducting staff training

Routinely meets with supervisor and participates in management meetings and activities.

Positively promotes Enable when working with persons inside and outside of Enable.

Cooperates with Enable and (DHS) Department of Human Services staff or other government entities during any inspection or investigation and accreditation reviews.

Successfully completes and demonstrates proficiency in all areas of required training.

Acknowledges the employee’s name will be checked against the Central Registry of Offenders against Individuals with Developmental Disabilities.

Completes other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Pay: $65,755.49 - $130,172.91 per year
