Summary of Position
The Director of Engineering is responsible for leading and managing a team of engineers responsible for driving facility design, process re-design, identifying and working with new technologies, continuous improvement and sustainability projects throughout all of Walker’s distribution network. This includes process or business changes to start up new sites and/or existing site redesign, reduce operating costs, improve service and increase capacity.
Responsibilities
- Lead a small team of Industrial Engineers and Lean Specialists to enable the efficient integration of people, process and systems.
- Utilize the principles, methods, and tools of Lean - Six Sigma to identify areas for time and cost savings.
- Analyze appropriateness of current technology and make equipment recommendations.
- Develop process flow and vsm analyses to capture current operations and identify process improvements.
- Produce and maintain CAD layouts to allow for a detailed engineering analysis.
- Responsible for the solution discovery, specification, and collaboration with procurement resources to identify/select external MHE service providers to further enable and optimize our DCs.
- Identify, develop, and champion business cases for small, medium and large-scale projects and initiatives.
- Develop and maintain projects database with other relevant departments within Operations to provide end-to-end transparency of project activities, risks and statuses.
Skills/Education
- Bachelor’s Degree or Masters’ Degree in Industrial Engineering with 5-8+ years of managerial experience
- LEAN-Six Sigma Green Belt certification preferred and Black Belt certification a plus
- Experience working in a 3PL environment is a must.
- Experience leading the concept and implementation phase of a Greenfield or a major DC change implementation.
- Operations Experience in a Distribution Center and/or Production Logistics environment required.
- Work measurement methodologies and tools (MOST, MTM etc.)
- Knowledge and experience with WMS, inventory management, manufacturing execution systems
- Travel required – 50%
