Director of Culinary Education

Homes for the Homeless is seeking a Director of Culinary Education in the Bronx who will spearhead the ongoing development, program strategy, and day-to-day management of our Culinary Education and Employment Programs. These programs are comprised of a full culinary curriculum along with baking, barista, and gardening components in state-of-the-art commercial kitchen facilities at one of HFH’s Bronx facilities.

Homes for the Homeless, Inc. (HFH) is a non-profit social services organization operating Community Residential Resource Centers (CRRCs) throughout NYC that serve not only as shelters for families with children experiencing homelessness, but also as a hub of opportunity for families both residing in shelter as well as those in the neighboring community. On-site programs range from childcare, early childhood education centers, afterschool clubs and programs, and youth recreation activities, such as sports teams, to housing assistance, case management, parenting workshops, career and job vocational training, support groups and substance abuse assistance, and family engagement and recreation events for the whole family.

HFH’s Allie’s Place Family Residence launched the Culinary Education and Employment Programs in 2020, and continues to grow the program, bringing in more skills, classes, and students. The program also focuses on placing graduates into culinary jobs across the city.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and update existing long-term strategy for the culinary education program.
  • Design, update, and review existing curriculum for each program component.
  • Manage all culinary education staff, including chefs, curriculum developers, gardening associates, interns, and outreach and placement specialists.
  • Liaise with HFH program staff as needed for program development, recruiting, and job placement.
  • Update culinary, baking and barista training techniques in line with best practices, methods, and trends, as needed.
  • Oversee the preparation of lesson plans and ensure instruction is carried out in a manner consistent with the program’s goals.
  • Create and monitor facility, staff, and class schedules to ensure efficient use of resources.
  • With the assistance of HFH staff collaborate on data to monitor program success.
  • Manage participant recruitment process including interviews and training.
  • Monitor performance of teaching chefs and education specialists.
  • Coordinate with affiliated staff to ensure proper operation and maintenance of all kitchen appliances and equipment.
  • Work with purveyors and suppliers for purchasing.
  • Oversee and assist with the development of community and corporate partnerships with prospective employers to promote programs and graduates.
  • Manage the daily operations of the culinary kitchen.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  • A minimum of 3 years professional management experience including the supervision of kitchen and/or baking staff.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in the hospitality industry. Managing culinary, kitchen, and hospitality staff desired.
  • Purchasing, procurement and inventory management experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Culinary Arts and/or Baking and Pastry Arts degree or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in culinary and/or baking and post-secondary instruction
  • Experience developing culinary/baking curriculum.
  • Appropriate certifications such as NYC Food Handler’s, ServSafe, and Allergen Safety
  • A strong passion for working with families in need of employment opportunities and educational support.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends as required by program’s needs.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and function in a typical teaching kitchen environment.
