This position supports our healthcare professional liability line of business (HCPL) and we are seeking candidates in the Birmingham AL area.
Job Summary:
The Director of Claims is an experienced claims leadership position that works side-by-side with the Vice President of Claims to ensure exceptional claims results. The Director of Claims develops and maintains highly-productive relationships with claims specialists, underwriters and risk management staff, as well as, policyholders, agents and outside defense counsel. The Claims Director directs the claims staff and provides guidance, mentoring, and coaching on claims and litigation management strategies, policy interpretation and coverage.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
55% - Team Management and Leadership:
  • Recruit, develop and mentor Claims Team.
  • Provides high level technical direction and guidance to claims staff on claims issues and works with VP of Claims to provide authority to claims staff in excess of their authority levels.
  • Ensures that claims employees follow workflows, processes and guidelines.
  • Guides, mentors and coaches claim staff on assigned claims.
  • Actively manages claims operations for team.
  • Leads and provides education and professional development training to staff and identifies staff development opportunities.
  • Ensure the delivery of dynamic and diverse educational programs to support development of existing staff and to recruit new talent to the Company. Provides technical guidance and supervision for direct reports including hiring, performance management and employee education and career development.
  • Collaborates with other Claims Management on ongoing evaluation of regional staffing models and workload assignments. Solicits frequent feedback, identifies trends and makes recommendations to maintain effective and efficient protocols, workflows, and best practices that lead to better outcomes in all claims functions.
30% - Claims Management:
  • Identifies, monitors, and reports on emerging claims and litigation trends.
  • Creates and reviews claims reports regarding key claims management and performance measures.
  • Implements claims management procedures and strategies.
  • Works with Regional VP of Claims on the assignment of incoming claims and lawsuits, coverage direction and reserve recommendations.
  • Performs account coordination activities with other departments when needed.
  • Performs internal quality control audits.
  • Participates in internal and external audits.
  • Participates in policyholder meetings for new and renewal business.
  • Continuously work with claims staff on up to date files in preparation for reinsurance, state and internal audits.
  • Ensures compliance with individual state requirements and claims policies and procedures.
5% - Strategic Planning:
  • Stays abreast of market conditions, economic changes and industry trends and recommends appropriate claim strategy changes, as indicated.
5% - Financial Results Management:
  • May develop, manage and monitor budget.
Secondary Responsibilities:
5% - Performs a variety of special projects or other duties as directed by management.
  • Up to 50% travel.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Advanced degree, such as RN or JD preferred.
  • Ten years’ experience handling professional liability claims.
  • Six years managing professional level claims staff with three of those responsible for direct management of a Claims team.
  • Ability to motivate, coach, train and develop staff.
  • Highly developed organizational, planning and management skills and the ability to lead people and get results through others.
  • Demonstrates advanced technical claims proficiency, proficiency in Microsoft Office computer applications, particularly Excel; ability to learn new computer software applications.
  • Sound technical skills, analytical ability, high ethical standards, good judgment and strong operational focus.
  • Ability to travel to other offices, attend insurance and industry/business functions to promote and present a positive image of the Company.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to ongoing professional education and community involvement.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both verbally and in writing with various constituencies and at all levels, internally and externally.
  • Solid analytical and problem solving skills, including formulating logical and objective conclusions. Advanced analytical ability; ability to analyze and interpret information to make well-informed decisions regarding claim handling strategies.
  • Ability to prioritize, anticipate and solve practical problems or resolve issues.
  • Ability to assess the urgency and importance of a situation and take appropriate action.
  • Skilled negotiator. Leads Claims team in negotiations.
Position Salary Range
$108,218.00 - $178,577.00
