Penguin Workshop Books and Grosset & Dunlap Books, imprints in the Penguin Young Readers division of Penguin Random House, are searching for a Designer to work on children’s books in an exciting, collaborative, fast-paced environment that also has a lot of humor and heart.


Penguin Workshop’s list includes picture books by Jessica Hische, Pura Belpré Honor winner Carlos Aponte, and Geisel Award–winning artists Jonathan Fenske and J. E. Morris. Grosset & Dunlap includes classic brands like The Little Engine That Could and exciting originals such as the But Why? non-fiction series and the inclusive Little Bible Stories board book series. We are looking for a Designer with an ability to design with an inclusive mindset which considers the full range of human diversity with respect to ability, language, culture, gender, age, and other forms of human experience.


S
pecific responsibilities include:


  • Working with the Art Director, this Designer will immediately hit the ground running, taking ownership of their own titles in all aspects of book making.
  • Designing covers and interiors with fresh typography for approximately 20-30 books a year for picture books, board books, chapter books, illustrated middle-grade, and non-fiction with fully designed interiors.
  • Finding and pitching illustrators and working with them to take a project from start to finish.
  • Effectively communicating with artists and agents.
  • Creating, maintaining, and strictly adhering to schedules and deadlines.


Please apply if you meet the following minimum requirements:


  • A passion for books for all children
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in book publishing design; children’s publishing strongly preferred
  • A portfolio that showcases strong design and typography—hand-lettering and illustration skills a plus but not required. (Please note that this is not an illustration job.)
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) with emphasis on InDesign
  • Knowledge of color correction, prepress, file preparation, and proofing for print design
  • Ability to work on multiple projects with strict timelines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail


The salary for the Designer position is $60,000.

The salary range listed is specific to each particular open position and takes into account various factors including the specifics of the individual role, and candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
