MITRE Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD) is seeking motivated, creative Data Scientists with a specialization in machine learning to develop innovative solutions and make evidence-based recommendations to help the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) chart the future of aviation. You will passionately apply your Data Science skills and experience to help the FAA improve safety and efficiency in air traffic operations, use your curiosity and interest to understand and solve complex problems using objective and quantitative methods, and work directly with government sponsors and industry to gain an understanding of their challenges, evaluate solutions and conduct insightful, actionable analyses.
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct analyses of multi-modal aviation data to identify ways to improve predictive models, identify trends impacting operations, and apply predictive analytics and machine learning techniques to gain actionable insights
- Collaborate with aviation domain experts and other data scientists to analyze and breakdown business requirements into data analysis objectives
- Analyze and evaluate processes and data sources to derive actionable recommendations, improve system efficiency, and deliver technical deep-dive sponsor presentations
- Develop efficient and repeatable data pipelines for efficient data transfers, extractions, culling, manipulation, and preparation for input into analyses and machine learning models
- Apply innovative analysis techniques to uncover anomalous characteristics or precursors to aviation risks or inefficiencies
- Draw conclusions from a wide range of aviation system data and articulate key findings in both written and verbal form
- Develop data visualization products that simplify presentation of big data calculations
- Commit to continued learning and stay up to date with latest advancements in data science and machine learning
- Liaise with other teams across MITRE to enhance technological stack, to enable the adoption of the latest advances in data science and machine learning
Minimum Qualifications:
- Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in one of the following: data engineering, statistical modeling, predictive analytics, or machine learning
- Experience in one of the following: anomaly detection, time-series forecasting, or data mining
- Experience in big data analysis tools and systems, such as Python, R, Spark, Hadoop
- Experience using SQL and relational databases such as Hive, Oracle, Postgres, MySQL
- Experience in data visualization tools
- Self-starter capable of working in a dynamic environment
- Demonstrated ability to complete tasks and drive projects to closure in a fast-paced environment
- Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to reach out to technical experts
- Strong motivation to continually expand knowledge and skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to convey complex ideas or analyses in a clear and organized manner
- Interest in complex multi-disciplinary problems and ability to work with colleagues across Engineering domains
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or related subjects
- Experience in text mining and natural language processing
- Experience building large-scale data processing pipelines
- Experience in data manipulation, analysis, and visualization using aviation or transportation data
- Familiarity to write and debug SQL queries
- Experience training and deploying machine learning models at scale (e.g. AWS, Azure)
- Strong software development skills. Proficiency in Python and Java preferred
- Self-motivated, creative, collaborative, and mission focused
- Critical thinking, including the ability to understand a complex engineering problem and propose novel solutions
- Strong interpersonal skills and significant experience working with multi-disciplined teams
