About the Team
The Credit Portfolio Management (“CPM”) team is responsible for managing enterprise credit risk across the Commercial and Investment Bank. The team sets firm Risk Appetite and executes portfolio stress-testing, concentration risk management, identification of emerging risks, and comprehensive industry / sector credit analyses. CPM provides proactive monitoring for obligors and sectors utilizing various market indicators to support Credit Risk Management decision making across Mizuho.
CPM supports sound credit risk decision-making by providing tools to proactively monitor risk. The team is organized into three pillars:
  • Portfolio Management, including Risk Appetite and Concentration Limit setting
  • Data Management and Reporting
  • Industry Research
Summary
Credit Risk Management is seeking an Executive Director-level candidate to lead its Industry Research function and support risk management of Mizuho’s credit asset portfolio. In addition to overseeing execution of the team’s mandate, the candidate will also cover the Real Estate, Autos, Industrials, and Media & Telecom sectors. Key responsibilities include gathering and analyzing industry information, financial modeling, and writing reports on industries and companies under coverage. Candidates should be able to clearly identify macro and micro credit risk factors that impact both individual companies and broader industries and sub-sectors.
Key responsibilities are summarized below:
  • Writing comprehensive Industry initiation research reports, providing analysis of news and data releases and implications to sector coverage, and producing ad hoc thematic reports on industry developments that impact the credit quality of Mizuho’s wholesale portfolio
  • Conducting proprietary research evaluating the competitive landscape, and diligence through surveys, expert conference calls, and various channel checks to evaluate industry trends
  • Building dynamic financial models or using existing tools for quantitative analysis as necessary
  • Proactively engaging with credit officers on industry developments to inform internal rating actions and enterprise credit risk limit management, as appropriate
  • Debate and challenge team members’ research assumptions and conclusions across all industries and segments
  • Preparing for presentations to Senior Management, Banking teams, Management Committees, Regulators and other stakeholders
  • Sourcing alternative data sets and simplifying and summarizing relevant industry and company information for inclusion in research reports
  • Creating and maintaining relationships with industry contacts and key stakeholders
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with major in Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, or Economics preferred; advanced degree (MBA) or CFA is a plus
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in the financial services industry; experience in sellside or buyside equity research preferred
  • Highly motivated professional with relevant industry experience preferred. Ability to prioritize multiple deliverables while handling managerial responsibilities.
  • Experience writing and speaking in a professional capacity. Crafting research notes and / or development and presentation of industry reports.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Experience managing a team and training junior analysts
  • Ability to function independently while maintaining a collegial and collaborative approach to supervising team members
  • Experience utilizing Excel and S&P Capital IQ to build / maintain financial models; an advanced level of excel proficiency is expected and required
The expected base salary ranges from $210,000 - $280,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications and licenses obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. In addition to salary and a generous employee benefits package, successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus.
