This position was located within the Department of Public Safety (DPS) but transferred to the Department of Adult Correction on January 1, 2023.

The standardized annual salary for this position is $58,702 dependent upon funds available and OSHR approval.*

Reporting to the Associate Warden for Custody, this position will provide supervision of subordinate staff. Job responsibilities include; but are not limited to, the following:

• Conducting shift line-up and ensuring staff are in compliance with the appearance and grooming policy; inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post; accounting for persons and ensuring all assigned equipment is issued and operationally ready for duty; making shift assignments.
• Completing, reviewing, and maintaining time reports, leave schedules, duty rosters, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
• Performing inspections; completing and reviewing shift narratives for accuracy.
• Identifying training needs of subordinate staff and ensuring they attend and complete all required training.
• Conducting investigations.
• Developing prison operations, emergency plans, and post orders.

This is a full-time position working rotating shifts with State Benefits.

The salary grade for this position is NC11. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (DAC):
DAC is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance and Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs and Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation and Reentry.

About Pender Correctional Institution:
Pender Correctional Institution is located in Burgaw, North Carolina and houses up to 768 male offenders in a medium custody facility.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant
Or
Two years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant II
Or
An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
