Computer Science Graduate Research Assistant Job at Los Alamos National Laboratory
What You Will Do
The Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library (https://researchlibrary.lanl.gov) seeks a Graduate Research Assistant in computational sciences to help imagine, create, and sustain its digital services. We support the Laboratory's paramount mission to solve national security challenges through scientific excellence by delivering essential knowledge services. The durable value of these services depends on a foundation of effective and efficient software infrastructure.
The candidate will primarily work to help build and deploy a custom application with open-source, machine- learning -based, data extraction tools for automatic feature extraction on scientific and technical documents. The goal is to extract metadata (title, authors, sections, subjects, full-text, images, etc.) from PDF documents in real-time and process this data into a desired structure. Once the extraction and data structuring works convincingly, the candidate will help integrate the developed application into production submission workflows for LANL's review and release system, RASSTI, and other library workflows. This position will work with various data processing software packages including GROBID (GeneRation Of BIbliographic Data), BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers), PDFFigures2, and PyPDF2. Work will also include local implementation of other open-source software, such as Apache Solr and Laravel, to help structure data and display PDF content.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Understanding of software development methodologies, tools, and processes, including source code control and team collaboration tools.
- Experience developing software applications using programming languages such as PHP, Java, or Python.
- Experience with database systems such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
- Knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, modern web development frameworks, and web services/APIs.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment with experience communicating and collaborating.
- Ability to learn and apply new technologies and processes. An openness to suggesting and adopting new approaches to improve work effectiveness and efficiency.
Education/Experience:
- Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in Computer Science, Information or Library Science, or a related technical discipline.
- Must be enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent).
- Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
