Description: The Community Health Educator is responsible for opioid prevention education in the community. Works in the Wildcat Region (the tri-county region, to include Pottawatomie County, Geary County, and Riley County), with priority target population as those who are considered underserved and at higher risk of being affected by opioid misuse. Works closely with the three health departments and schools in the region to improve access to education and prevention methods. Improves access to prevention methods and acts as a bridge between community members and key service providers, assisting community members in education opportunities and trainings. The Health Educator must communicate in a culturally appropriate manner.
Essential Functions:

  • Participate in developing or strengthening overdose prevention strategies
  • Serve as an additional point of contact for key service providers, hospitals, health department and school staff, and community members.
  • Assist in coordinating team meetings to discuss new prevention strategies for reaching the most vulnerable community members, along with the use of integrated referral intake system (IRIS).
  • Participate in zoom meetings related to the project.
  • Assist with implementation and conducting of trainings and presentations in the schools and in MCH program with pregnant moms.
  • Identify and teach age appropriate and drug specific prevention curriculum.
  • Develop and implement a local resource list for substance use disorder treatment.
  • As needed, work with and collaborate with Health Department staff and external partners for establishing additional prevention strategies within your community
  • Implement policies and programs
  • Implementing policies and programs in settings to facilitate linkage to recovery-oriented systems of care for substance use disorder with risk of overdose.
  • Engage community leadership and community leaders and organizations.
  • Develop professional relationships with community leaders and organizations
  • Maintain inventory of prevention strategies, educational presentations, and trainings by providing presentations on evidence-based overdose prevention, intervention, and harm reduction strategies.

Requirements: Position Requirements:

  • Required within 10 days of employment: TB screening including baseline screening for M. tuberculosis infection, Proof of hepatitis B immunity or vaccine, or vaccine series started, proof of MMR, varicella, Tdap vaccinations, or immunity.
  • Bilingual employee who has passed the proficiency test may take a medical interpreter skills test to interpret between a client with LEP and an English-speaking employee. (National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health and Health Care).

Education: High school diploma, GED or equivalent required. Associate’s or higher degree in a health or related field preferred. Completion of Community Health Worker training preferred.

Experience: *1 year of health education experience required. One year of experience working or living in a multicultural setting required. One year experience in community health work or health navigator preferred. One year experience in a public health department or healthcare setting preferred

Disclosures are only allowed as necessary for treatment to providers and/or Business Associates, for billing, health care operations or as required by law. May need to interact with the following departments for allowable access to PHI: All County Departments.
  • May have to work outside of normal work hours and use of personal vehicle may be required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.34 - $18.34 per hour
