Community Education Researcher Job at Institute for Learning Innovation

Institute for Learning Innovation Hampton, VA

The Institute for Learning Innovation (ILI) is collaborating with the Virginia Air & Space Science Center and Hampton Roads area school districts in learning how to support youth STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) learning in and out of the classroom.

We are looking for an organized and dynamic person to join our team as a local education researcher and collect data to examine the impact of STEM programming on students. Data collection will involve interviewing 5th and 6th graders and observing classroom activities in school and on field trips in the Hampton Roads area.

The applicant selected will work in a contract position, part-time for up to 1.5 years. The number of hours per week will vary depending on the varying needs of the project. Work will take place during school hours.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Conduct in-person interviews with youth using an existing interview guide
  • Conduct class observations in a local elementary school and on school field trips
  • Travel to a local school and school field trip sites
  • Participate in research training
  • Communicate regularly with team members via email
  • Send collected data to the Senior Researcher
  • Participate in virtual (Zoom) team meetings on a regular basis

Qualifications:

Required

  • A Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Available during school hours
  • Has access to a computer
  • Has access to the internet
  • Enjoys frequent collaboration but can work well independently
  • Has a keen attention to detail
  • Able to organize one’s own time and problem solve
  • Ability to clearly communicate and ask questions for clarification when needed.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and days as necessary
  • Has own transportation

Preferred

  • Interested in psychology or education research.
  • Experience interviewing is a plus
  • Is comfortable interacting with 5th and 6th graders from various ethnic and demographic backgrounds
  • Is comfortable working with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Is comfortable working with Google apps (Google docs, Google sheets)

$20/hour
