Communications and Marketing Assistant Job at Roulette Intermedium
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Roulette Intermedium, New York’s premier space for the promotion and presentation of contemporary experimental performing arts, seeks a dynamic and creative Communications and Marketing Assistant to assist the Director of Communications and Marketing with a wide variety of projects and administrative tasks toward engaging new and existing audiences and promoting adventurous music, dance, and intermedia performances. This is a full-time position with benefits.
The Communications and Marketing Assistant will facilitate outward communication—primarily through social media and other owned channels, including email newsletters and website, as well as via cross-promotions, influencers, and press—about Roulette’s programming and the organization’s broader identity as an arts presenter and rental venue.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create and schedule social media posts to promote upcoming events at Roulette and past livestreams and more broadly share and engage followers in timely or compelling conversations about avant garde performance. This will require light video editing skills.
- Help to define Roulette’s institutional voice, primarily on social media.
- Cultivate and manage a list of experimental music/performance influencers.
- Assist in drafting and sending weekly newsletters and fundraising and campaign emails to Roulette’s subscribers via MailChimp.
- Draft and send press releases promoting upcoming performances.
- Update and maintain listings on event calendars; keep list of outlets up-to-date.
- Compile and archive press clippings.
- Respond to press inquiries and occasionally liaise with press in person at performances (would be scheduled and agreed upon in advance).
- Communicate with artists and update concert event pages on WordPress, when necessary, to reflect changes to personnel or programming for upcoming performances.
- Follow up with artists to obtain information for printed programs; occasionally draft printed programs in InDesign.
- Hire and supervise freelance photographers as necessary to document performances.
- As needed, create and design graphics for YouTube and Vimeo livestreams.
- Compile data on livestream views.
- As needed/requested, create/update signage and other promotional displays for the performance space.
- Participate in creative meetings with other staff members and Artistic leadership.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will have 1-2 years of professional marketing and/or communications experience, preferably working for a contemporary performing arts venue or non-profit. Familiarity with Roulette’s programming and contemporary experimental music, dance, and the media arts in NYC and beyond is extremely valuable. The position requires excellent writing and project management skills, in particular the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a timely, organized fashion. Some design skills, preferably with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and IndDesign, is preferred. Experience with Adobe Premiere, WordPress, MailChimp, and AudienceView or other CRM is a plus.
COMPENSATION
This is a full-time, 40 hr/wk, non-exempt, benefits-eligible position paid at a rate of $20-24/hour. Benefits include four weeks paid vacation, paid holidays, medical, dental, and vision coverage.

Founded in 1978 by four artists in a TriBeCa loft in NYC, Roulette has grown into an internationally recognized performing arts venue and presenter of experimental music, dance, and intermedia featuring some of today's most prolific artists and their extraordinary emerging counterparts. Historically, Roulette presents 120 annual performances alongside an additional 150 community/rental events, serving up to 70,000 annual visitors in our 12,000-square-foot venue in Downtown Brooklyn. In addition to its robust live programming, Roulette presents a monthly podcast, weekly and monthly radio shows, and weekly TV segments on Manhattan and Brooklyn public access. Our mission is to support artists creating new and adventurous art in all disciplines by providing them with a venue and resources to realize their creative visions, and to build an audience interested in the evolution of experimental art.
