Under general supervision, conducts inspections of residential and commercial properties to enforce code requirements and zoning restrictions as adopted by the City and State.

The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Inspects new building construction, renovations and repairs for compliance with building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical codes.
  • Enforces building codes, zoning restrictions and City ordinances in assigned neighborhoods.
  • Studies codes, laws and ordinances governing construction, plumbing, mechanical and electrical trades.
  • Sorts and distributes inspections, logs inspections, prepares and files inspection reports.
  • Assists with commercial plan review with respect to plumbing, heating ventilation and air conditioning.
  • Assists with the resolution of property owners' problems and concerns.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of Federal, State and local building codes, ordinances and standards.
  • Knowledge of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, HVAC and related building trades.
  • Knowledge of building construction and related materials and tools.
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety methods and techniques for building inspections.
  • Skill in conducting building inspections.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting a variety of construction documents including blueprints.
  • Skill in analyzing and interpreting building codes.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication.

Required Education, Experience, and Certifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, and three (3) years building inspection or construction experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess certification as a plumbing inspector from the Texas State Plumbing Board.
  • Must possess International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner or be able to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Other ICC certifications including Commercial and/or Residential Building Inspector, Electrical Inspector and Mechanical Inspector are desired.
  • Must pass a post-offer pre-employment drug screening and/or physical exam.
  • Must possess State of Texas Driver's License.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $48,401.44 - $58,081.73 per year
