Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder welcomes applications for a Professional Research Assistant (PRA). This position will work in the Copley Research Group with Professor Shelley Copley. This position will be responsible for constructing engineered strains of various bacteria and carrying out laboratory evolution of engineered strains. Responsibilities include isolating genomic DNA from evolved strains, analyzing mutations that have occurred, introducing mutations of interest into the genome of the parental strain, and assessing the impact on gene expression and growth rate. The PRA will also assist a Post-doc in the lab with various tasks, including bacterial growth, genome editing and cloning.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Construct engineered strains of various bacteria and carrying out laboratory evolution of engineered strains.
  • Isolate genomic DNA from evolved strains and analyzing mutations that have occurred.

  • Maintaining laboratory equipment.

What You Should Know

  • This is a 12-month position with the possibility of extension contingent on performance and funding.
  • This position is expected to be in the lab full-time.
  • The anticipated state date for this position is mid to late May 2023.

  • The annual salary range for this position is $41,000. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology.
  • At least one year of laboratory research.
  • Experience in cloning and genome editing in E. coli and in measuring bacterial growth curves.

What You Will Need

  • Strong understanding of the Central Dogma.
  • Ability to use sterile technique for cultivation of bacteria.
  • Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks.
  • Skills in molecular cloning and genome editing.
