The primary role and responsibility of the preschool teacher assistant and/or childcare assistant is to assist the preschool teacher and/or childcare supervisor in helping students learn attitudes, skills, and subject matter that will contribute to their development.

SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

It is expected that the preschool/childcare assistant will …

• Represent the early childhood profession positively in the community through effectively communicating the early education program’s mission and its value for children.
• Recognize the need for good public relations, and represent the early education program in a favorable and professional manner to the program’s constituency and general public.
• Assist in the supervision of extracurricular activities, organizations, and outings as assigned.
• Assist children with toileting and changing those who have experienced toileting accidents.
• Perform routine first aid, and seek assistance for non-routine illnesses and injuries.
• Share in the joint housekeeping responsibilities of staff.
• Assist in maintaining the classroom and work areas for maximum effectiveness and safety. Maintain a clean, attractive, and well-ordered classroom.
• Perform clerical duties for the preschool teacher and the early education program.
• Complete duties effectively and promptly.
• Assist the preschool teacher with the organization of materials and supplies, inventory of equipment and supplies, and upkeep of equipment.
• Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the administration.

REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL QUALITIES

It is expected that the Preschool Teacher Assistant/Daycare Assistant will …

• Demonstrate a reasonable level of computer literacy, having a basic proficiency in doing word processing, creating and using a spreadsheet, e-mailing, and accessing the Internet.
• Possess evidence of other adequate preparation, background, or experience as determined by the superintendent.
• Enrolled in the Oregon Professional Registry.
• Enrolled in the Oregon Criminal History Registry
• Maintain current infant/child CPR and first aid certification, food handlers training, and abuse awareness training.
• Participate in a minimum of 15 yearly clock hours of continuing education training as required for licensure.
