Job Summary
Is available and responsible to provide and coordinate pastoral services during the non-business hours (after 5PM weekdays, weekends and holidays) of the hospital. Is accessible by pager for assigned periods of time and will respond as needed to the requests for pastoral services. Is responsible for documenting their work in hospital records and reporting their activities through statistical reports that are provided to the Chaplain Coordinator.
Job Responsibilities
1. Professional Pastoral Services
  • Coordinates the provision of pastoral services to families from a wide variety of faiths and religions as requested by hospital staff. Works collaboratively with the Chaplain Coordinator and Bereavement Coordinator.
  • Provides pastoral services for a wide variety of faiths as requested by hospital staff. Services may include, but are not limited to, spiritual interventions at a time of crisis or death. Patients, families or caregivers may be clients of the per-diem chaplain.
  • Coordinates with communities of faith to arrange for the special spiritual needs of a patient, family or staff member. This activity may include collaboration with staff at the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (St. Agatha and James), the Board of Rabbis or other denominations.
  • Recommends service improvements to the Chaplain Coordinator.

2. Professional Communications
  • Completes all requisite patient care charting in the medical record.
  • Completes all statistical reports and logs to ensure effective communications across the shifts.
  • Demonstrates effective verbal skills while providing direct services to clients and members of the interdisciplinary team.

3. Professional Development
  • Completes annual hospital mandatory training.
  • Completes 15 hours per year of documented professional education
  • Participates in departmental mandatory education.
  • Meets periodically with the Chaplain Coordinator for supervision of practice and education.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations
Required Education and Experience
  • Master of Divinity degree or equivalent is required.
  • Demonstrated progress towards completing board certification within 5 years
  • Three (3) years of experience as a parish or congregation clergy and an endorsement from a recognized denomination or faith organization is required.
Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic
  • Board Certification strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of one unit of CPE is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously while maintaining a strong sense of teamwork
  • Personal organization and excellent time management skills
  • Ability to establish effective pastoral relationships quickly with a wide and diverse group of persons who may be experiencing significant physical or spiritual trauma
  • Ability to understand a patient/family’s spiritual beliefs accurately so as to provide (or arrange for) appropriate services
