Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Job at Milwaukee Health Services, Inc
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager, the Department RN/Charge RN or Licensed Practical Nurse, the Medical Assistant is expected to provide support to the provider in assessment, examination, treatment, and other management of patients in the clinical setting. Strong customer service, communication, teamwork, and multi- tasking skills is a must. Perform duties and carryout the necessary functions required in accordance with established policies and procedures. All duties performed must reflect Clinical Skill Checklist competency as determined during the orientation and probation periods and updated as recommended by supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Obtain vital signs, prepare and maintain examination and treatment areas in preparation for patient care. Assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments. Perform pre-visit screening following protocols approved by MHSI and supervising provider.
- Prepare and administer oral and medications and immunizations as directed by supervising provider and as permitted by Wisconsin law.
- Screen and follow up test results per protocols. Collect and process specimens correctly. Perform electrocardiography and respiratory testing. Schedule, coordinate, and monitor appointments.
- Evaluate and record patient history employing critical thinking skills using appropriate tools and protocols within the EMR.
- Document patient communication and clinical treatments timely, accurately, and appropriately.
- Establish, organize and maintain patient medical records. Maintain medication and immunization records in EMR and through Wisconsin Immunization Registry.
- Prepare and maintain examination and treatment areas in preparation for patient care, including inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Ensure providers schedules are reviewed the day before to determine the appropriateness of the schedule and that the necessary equipment is available the day of the patient’s visit.
- Ensure that charts are reviewed prior to patient arrival to assure necessary reports are available prior to patient’s arrival; review and follow up on lab reports in accordance with departmental protocol.
- Adapt communication to individual’s understanding and recognize and respond effectively to verbal, nonverbal, and written communications. Recognize and respect cultural diversity. Employ professional telephone and interpersonal techniques applying medical terminology appropriately in all settings.
- Receive, organize, prioritize, store, and maintain transmittable information utilizing electronic technology. Perform routine maintenance of clinical equipment. Apply computer and other electronic equipment techniques to support office operations.
- Identify community resources for health maintenance and disease prevention to meet individual patient needs. Serve as communication liaison between the provider and patient. Serve as patient advocate and health coach along with team-based care, including coverage for other staff and providers.
- Educate the patient within the scope of practice and as directed by supervising provider in health maintenance, disease prevention, and compliance with patient’s treatment plan.
- Identify and respond to issues of confidentiality. Perform tasks within legal and ethical boundaries.
- Comply with established risk management and safety procedures.
- Recognize and respond to emergencies.
- Perform and actively participate in quality control, quality improvement, and organizational strategic plans.
- Attend and actively participate in department and other organizational meetings.
- Maintain skills through continuing education. Recognize professional credentialing criteria.
- Participate in orientation and training of new medical assistant employees as directed by the Clinical Nurse Manager and MHSI protocols.
- Understand that location/department assignment is not permanent and may be changed at any time at the discretion of the Clinical Nurse Manager to meet the needs of the organization.
- Understand provider assignment is not permanent and may be changed at any time at the discretion of the Clinical Nurse Manager to meet the needs of the organization.
- Assist with providing extended/urgent care coverage as needed and when requested for various MHSI sites.
- Ask for help, direction, assistance, and support as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Education: Certification as a Medical Assistant, Associates of Science with AAMA certification preferred. Certification in CPR mandatory.
- Experience: Two years or more in a clinic, physician’s office or hospital setting preferred. Nursing students who have completed at least two nursing clinical rotations will be considered for this position.
- Expertise: Basic knowledge of Medical Terminology is mandatory. Proficiency in conversational Spanish is a plus. Must demonstrate the ability to handle and deal with multiple situations effectively. Must have empathy and compassion for all patients and staff. Demonstrate the ability to treat all patients and staff with dignity and respect. Must perform in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Must demonstrate the ability to work efficiently, effectively and productively with Providers and staff. Demonstrated excellence in customer service. Ability to communicate with the provider, charge nurse, and Clinical Nurse Manager nurse in a cooperative, respectful, and constructive manner is essential.
- Language: Comprehend and use basic language either written or spoken to communicate information and ideals. Intermediate to advanced computer and EMR proficiency.
