The Weitz Company is seeking an experienced Human Resources Manager - Benefits to be located out of the corporate office in Des Moines, IA.


The Human Resources Manager – Benefits is responsible for managing the administration of all benefits and retirement programs, to include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, voluntary products, disability programs, 401(k) plan, and nonqualified deferred compensation plan. This role will ensure company offerings are comprehensive, market competitive, and comply with all relevant laws and regulations. The Benefits Manager typically reports to the Vice President of Human Resources and supervises the Benefits Associate.


What You'll Do:

  • Manage day-to-day administration of benefits offerings
  • Respond to employee inquiries and ensure timely resolution of issues, escalating when appropriate
  • Manage benefit renewals, establish rates, and facilitate open enrollment process; code benefits in system
  • Research, recommend, and implement new benefits offerings to ensure market competitiveness
  • Develop, design, and disseminate company communications regarding benefits
  • Manage relationship and communication with benefits broker, vendors, and carriers
  • Prepare and facilitate distribution of required reports, forms, and notices (1095C, PCORI, etc.)
  • Respond to plan audits and address areas requiring attention
  • Understand plan provisions and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations (ACA, ERISA, COBRA, FMLA, etc.); stay abreast of changes
  • Oversee benefits eligibility process, to include distributing enrollment materials, conducting educational webinars, tracking enrollment completion, ensuring accuracy of enrollments, processing benefits file feeds, and monitoring ACA lookback period for eligibility impacts.
  • Oversee leave and disability programs (i.e. FMLA, STD, LTD) by coordinating with employees and third party administrator; communicate with managers and payroll team to ensure clarity of leave dates and leave pay is properly administered (i.e. PTO substitutions, unpaid time)
  • Review and propose updates to policies related to benefits (FMLA, ADA, etc.), as needed
  • Ensure accurate and timely payment of monthly vendor bills; provide allocation or billing reports as
  • Ensure benefit administration and payroll system data is maintained and current (employee changes, terminations, etc.)
  • Oversee educational assistance program, service awards programs, corporate wellness program and other related programs as assigned
  • Keep management informed on status of work, issues that may escalate, resource gaps and unmanaged risks
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What We're Looking For:

  • Education: A business-related bachelor’s degree is required; human resources emphasis preferred. SHRM-CP (Certified Practitioner) or CEBS (Certified Employee Benefits Specialist) certification is required or the willingness to obtain within 6 months.
  • Experience: A minimum of eight (8) years in a human resources role is required, including four years of experience in benefits administration. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Technology: Proficiency in basic computer software programs such as Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and Outlook. Employee should have the ability to learn other specific software (i.e. HRIS, benefit administration system, JDE, Tungsten, Bluebeam).
  • Skills: A qualified candidate will demonstrate solid verbal and written communication, supervisory abilities, business acumen, judgement and organization skills. They should also demonstrate strong attention to detail, decision-making, tact, flexibility to coordinate multiple projects and analytical abilities.
