Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) is seeking to a hire a full-time, year-round Watercraft Decontamination Program Manager to help AWI implement its flagship Stewardship Program. The Watercraft Inspection Program deploys approximately 28 boat decontamination stations at boat launches and roadside locations around the Adirondack region and trains and supports a large number of seasonal boat decontamination technicians to inspect watercraft for aquatic invasive species and to wash boats using high pressure hot water decontamination units.
Description:
The Watercraft Decontamination Program Manager directly supports the AWI Stewardship Team to administer the aquatic invasive species spread prevention program across the Adirondack Park. The position works under the supervision of the Assistant Director of the Stewardship Program to coordinate and implement watercraft decontamination services during the boating season. The Watercraft Decontamination Program Manager will oversee job duties of 40+ seasonal decontamination technicians and provide seasonal staff training and support throughout the boating season. The Program Manager will supervise a seasonal Decontamination Assistant who will support the goals of this position. The position is responsible for ensuring program quality and continuity of operations for AWI’s decontamination program. In the off-season, the position will focus on post-season logistics and pre-season planning for the decontamination services program.
The position is based at Paul Smith’s College campus and is not a remote position, However, during the boating season, this position is a hybrid of both office and off site. Approximately 80% of work time from late March to late October will be consist of travel and visits to decontamination sites across northern New York. During this period, regular travel around the Adirondack Park is required. A company vehicle will be provided.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for proper care, transport and maintenance of high-pressure hot-water equipment including: pressure washers, water reclamation systems, water transfer pumps, personal protective equipment, signs and safety equipment
- Responsible for planning, set up and dismantling of watercraft decontamination sites throughout the Adirondacks
- Responsible for working with state agencies and partners to coordinate and execute various watercraft decontamination program elements including permitting, reporting, logistical operations, safety and training
- Coordinate and lead the annual watercraft decontamination training for AWI
- Assist in mid-season training and supervising of seasonal Watercraft Inspection Stewards and seasonal Regional Supervisors, to include informal meetings and site visits
- Supervise, coach, and evaluate the seasonal Decontamination Assistant
- Assist in the recruitment process for AWI seasonal staff for the Program including helping to conduct interviews and attending recruitment events
- Oversee the maintenance of all AWI owned vehicles and watercraft
- Support and mentor field staff in order to ensure quality program messaging, and the integrity of the decontamination services AWI provides
- Develop and refine program protocols and procedures to enhance the quality of provided services
- Assist in preparing annual reports for the Stewardship Program
- Assist in education and outreach efforts year-round as needed

Qualifications: Required
- Interest in the mission of AWI and the work of the AIS spread prevention program
- Intermediate to advanced skills in the following disciplines: mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry
- Proven ability to supervise, train and evaluate seasonal employees
- Experience working with logistics and operations.
- Experience driving full-sized pickup trucks, to include connecting and towing heavy trailers at highway speeds
- Leadership and decision-making experience
- Ability to work periodic weekends and holidays
- Ability to effectively communicate with the public to professionally represent the principles of the AWI and the College
- Comfortable working with privately-owned watercrafts and using high pressure hot water to decontaminate them (3000 psi, 140o Fahrenheit)
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and maneuver program equipment such as wheel mounted pressure washers and wastewater collection pads
- New York State driver’s license and driving record acceptable to PSC insurance carrier and AWI, which will enable authorization to drive College-owned vehicles
Qualifications: Preferred but not required
- Knowledge of invasive species and spread mechanisms
- Familiarity with outdoor water-based recreation to include boating, skiing, fishing, paddling, swimming, wildlife viewing, etc.
