Aviation Safety Manager

Reports to: Director of Safety, Director of Operations

Southern Airways Express is seeking an Aviation Safety Manager (ASM) to develop and continuously improve all aspects of our Safety Management System (SMS) to ensure our ongoing responsibility to our passengers and employees. The salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The ASM will identify, investigate, audit, and evaluate all corporate, operational, and human processes through SMS policies and procedures, to continuously improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the stated company safety policy and mission. This role will include assisting in ensuring compliance with safety and health policies, procedures, and regulations across the organization. The ASM will be accountable for recordkeeping, maintaining an internal audit schedule, establishing safe working practices, and promoting a positive safety culture, ultimately resulting in effectively reducing risks, increasing safety awareness, and managing costs. This position will require working closely with pilots, mechanics, support personnel, and station managers to ensure compliance with safety initiatives, and relaying information to the Senior Level Management.

Additionally, the ASM will assist with managing the Company’s data collection profile. The position will also document, enter, track, and maintain certain Safety Management System (SMS) information and records in electronic format using the Company SharePoint website and Company shared drive.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Internal Flight Safety: 45%
    • Monitor aviation maintenance and flight operations to identify hazards.
    • Maintain flight line safety programs at station bases, including providing training and auditing access control to the flight line.
    • Engage in continuous feedback and communication for all safety report submitters.
    • Maintain an internal aviation safety incident reporting system, manage the investigation of internal aviation incidents, and initiate corrective action(s) as necessary.
    • Monitor and evaluate the results of corrective actions and ensure that the feedback loop and control measures are in place and working efficiently.
    • Represent aviation safety at operational departmental meetings to raise awareness of safety hazards, initiatives, and other safety information.
  • Company SMS: 35%
    • Assist with the development and implementation of a Safety Management System (SMS) for Southern Airways Express.
    • Facilitate safety risk management activities with other stakeholders to identify, assess, analyze, and mitigate aviation safety risks.
    • Ensures accurate and timely delivery of required safety reports, including monthly and quarterly summary reports, as well as ad hoc queries.
    • Provides weekly/monthly management reports on safety goals and objectives, as required.
    • Develop, organize, and facilitate a Safety Action Group (SAG) for Southern Airways Express and where necessary, escalate risk to a Safety Review Board (SRB).
    • Responsible for the development and management of an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) for aircraft incidents and accidents.
    • Oversee the development, delivery, and maintenance of SMS training to ensure employees possess the competencies appropriate to their role in aviation safety.
  • Incident Investigation: 20%
    • Participate and provide technical expertise regarding incident investigations, as requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in aviation or related field.
  • Certification in a safety-related field.
  • Safety Management System experience.
  • Possess 3-5 years of Aviation Industry experience.
  • Thorough working knowledge of Title 14 CFR Part 135 and Title 14 CFR Part 5.
  • Proficient in PC-based applications, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in aviation or related field.
  • Possession of an A&P or Pilots Airman Certificate.
  • Industry experience operating Part 91 or Part 135 aircraft.
  • Experience with OSHA regulations and compliance.

    • Work well under pressure and meet set deadlines.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
    • Be meticulous.


Miscellaneous Requirements

  • Fluency in English.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Computer, office equipment, phone skills.
  • Ability to pass 10-year background check and pre-employment drug screen per airline regulations and company policy.
  • Ability to work within a 24/7 operation, including holidays.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. per the Immigration Act of 1986.

Travel Expectations: 25-30%.
