Amentum, in support of the National Weather Service's National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) located at Stennis Space Center (SSC) Mississippi, is currently seeking an Atmospheric/Ocean Scientist. NDBC provides quality observations in the marine environment to Atmospheric/Ocean Scientist support the understanding of and predictions to changes in weather, climate, oceans, and coasts. NDBC designs, engineers, fabricates/integrates, tests, deploys, maintains/repairs 4 worldwide buoy systems: 106 Weather Buoy Stations, 43 Coastal Observation (C-MAN) stations, 55 Tropical Atmosphere-Ocean Array (TAO) systems, and 39 Deep-Ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami (DART) stations. Program scope also includes data analysis/storage/dissemination (via website/other means) of related weather and environmental data from these systems (25%) and other sources (75%) of in-situ weather data, Logistics, Information Technology/Data Administration, and Programming.
The National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) has a need for an Atmospheric/Ocean Scientist who will analyze and process the data from ocean buoys and provide analysis summaries and create plots/graphs of the data. The individual should have the ability to determine possible reasons for data anomalies. The position is also responsible for providing quality checks of the data and recommendations for improving data quality.
Position Responsibilities:

Work with NDBC scientists, engineers, and technicians in planning and execution of oceanographic field operations, data processing, data quality analysis, and data distribution.

Evaluate performance of new equipment and instrumentation to maintain, enhance, and improve the quality and efficiency of NDBC oceanographic and meteorological observations.

Support and cultivate regional collaboration with stakeholders and the public.

Process complex coastal and open ocean data sets from several sources to further NDBC understanding of the quality of the data and the utility of the observations to meet the NDBC mission.

Build long-term, time series of environmental data records in support of quality and reliability of ocean observing systems, with an emphasis on oceanography and marine meteorology

Write and publish scientific documents, both internally and externally to include internal NOAA reports, technical memoranda, panel presentations, conference proceeding and/or peer-reviewed publications.
Experience Requirements:

Four (4) or more years’ experience in analyzing meteorological and oceanographic observations (e.g. winds, atmospheric pressure, temperatures, currents, waves) in the marine environment and identifying observational errors of all types.

Understands, interprets and describes data gathered by in-situ observing stations, and remote sensing technologies.

Understands the relationships of numerical atmospheric and ocean products to observational data.

Strong experience with MATLAB and/or other numerical programming and analysis tools.

Technical/Scientific writing skills are necessary; having published scientific papers in the past is desirable.

Comfortable presenting and participating in science conferences, workshops and events of importance to NDBC.

In general, excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. are required.

Knowledge of modern data management techniques, quality control, distribution, documentation and archival.

Able to work autonomously and take initiative in identifying areas for improvements and proposing solution.
Education Requirements:

Master of Science in Atmospheric or Marine Science, Oceanography, Meteorology or other earth science. A Bachelor of Science in an earth science and additional years of experience may be considered.
