Job Description:
UES, Inc. has an opportunity available for an Associate Engineer to join our team working within the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. AFRL has a multidisciplinary team of chemists, materials scientists, and chemical engineers developing new materials and concepts for defense-related applications. The Composites Branch investigates, develops, and optimizes high-performance lightweight structural materials.
This program seeks to evaluate and understand the survivability of materials and systems during rapid exposures to extreme thermo-mechanical environments. The Associate Engineer’s primary responsibilities will involve basic and applied research to develop logistically lean, material-system designs capable of protecting underlying structures, which may involve polymeric, ceramic, and metallic elements. Materials characterization and selection, fabrication of possible solutions, and experimentation under relevant thermal and mechanical loads will be accomplished. This position will collaborate with AFRL’s multidisciplinary research staff and aid in the development of technologies for U.S. national security interests.
Requirements:
- B.S. or Masters in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related fields
- A strong background in formulation, processing, and characterization of ceramics, polymers, or composite materials
- Experience with thermal and thermo-mechanical analysis is preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skill will be required
- This position will require an individual that can thrive in an independent working environment and a team environment equally
- This position is working within a government facility and requires U.S. Citizenship
Preferred Qualifications:
- Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in processing and characterization of polymers and ceramics is preferred.
- The ability to connect performance to design and an understanding of the evolution of material characteristics is desired.
- Experience with thermal and thermo-mechanical analysis is preferred, including evaluation of properties such as expansion, heat capacity, diffusivity, emissivity, conductivity, and stability (TGA, DSC, dilatometer, thermomechanical analysis TMA, laser flash analysis LFA).
- Familiarization with methods of characterization of chemistry and structure is also beneficial.
