As an integral member of the Science Communications team, the Associate Director, R&D, Early Pipeline Communications role will lead early pipeline efforts across all TAs, including data read-outs, medical congress activities, earned, owned and paid media strategies; create content explaining and bringing to life our core research platforms, including liaising with the cross-functional Corporate Affairs team across strategy and execution, in collaboration with scientific, medical, development and commercial teams, as well as agency partners.
This role represents a critical member of the Science Communications team, and will also support the creation and execution of the overall integrated communications plan for the Research & Early Development and Global Drug Development organizations.
The role will report to the Executive Director of Science Communications.
Other Responsibilities Include:
- Work closely with matrix leaders across therapeutic areas to drive effective communications and initiatives aligned with the business and in support of the company’s corporate and scientific strategic messages.
- Develop and implement an integrated external communications plan to showcase the full BMS Early Pipeline (prior to hand-off to global drug development team) and raise the scientific profile of Bristol-Myers Squibb, aligning with the Corporate and R&D Strategy.
- Develop creative content on key targets, pathways and thematic areas of focus, aligned to the current pipeline, positioning BMS as a leader in the scientific community.
- Liaise with various stakeholders to prepare for disclosures at medical meetings, earnings announcements, collaborative announcements and other miscellaneous pipeline updates.
- Develop close partnership with Corporate Affairs colleagues supporting global drug development, to ensure cohesive communications plans around events like medical meetings
- Develop appropriate multi-channel approach for all communications opportunities; partner closely with appropriate team members to ensure accurate and timely deployment on digital and social channels as well as measurement/reporting.
- Ensure international colleagues have access to information and resources to educate their stakeholders on the full pipeline.
- Work collaboratively to ensure a smooth transition from Early Development to Global Drug Development.
- Manage an external PR agency for specific projects and be accountable for budget oversight and tracking.
- This role will not have any direct reports; however, the successful candidate will be able to manage cross-functional teams and work effectively in a highly matrixed organization.
Position Qualifications
The successful candidate will be a self-motivated leader with a track record of setting, driving and delivering against integrated communications strategies. S/he must be able to collaborate with cross-functional leaders and teams to develop comprehensive and creative communications strategies and have demonstrated ability to successfully lead and influence others. Finally, this individual will have a strong grasp of storytelling that can engage and energize a variety of audiences and support the company’s business objectives.
- 7+ years of professional experience in corporate affairs, with a focus on pharmaceutical communications preferred. A successful candidate will have:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Past experience of working in a pharmaceutical or scientific industry. Agency experience strongly preferred.
- Proven track record driving scientific communications and experience leading and advising senior and executive level employees and teams.
- A strong understanding of business critical priorities, and ability to apply understanding of market and competitive dynamics into strategy.
- Exceptional interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to partner effectively within Corporate Affairs and more broadly within the enterprise.
- Excellent writing skills (i.e., ability to produce clear, compelling, motivating communications quickly), and ability use scientific expertise to craft messages and strategies.
- Strong project management skills and the ability to successfully work in a matrix organization, lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple complex projects and prioritize effectively.
- Strong business acumen skills, ability to think strategically and creatively in the development and implementation of integrated communications.
- Proven experience operating within a complex, fast-paced and changing environment.
- Proficiency with web-based, digital communications and social media tools.
