The Assistant Scientist, at the Kang lab in the Department of Neural Sciences and Shriners Hospitals Pediatric Research Center, provides technical support by performing scientific experiments within a research lab. Independently handles experiments or small research projects requiring advanced knowledge and experience in a specific scientific area or discipline. Maintains records of data; works with mouse colony.
The lab has numerous ongoing projects regarding myelin/ oligodendrocyte biology and pathophysiology in neurodegenerative diseases, such Alzheimer’s disease, and myelin repair after brain injury
Responsibilities include: perform transgenic mice handling and brain sampling as well as basic histology work; learn and perform brain surgery that will induce traumatic brain injury; performs immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, and image analysis. Collect data and analyze results. Maintain and occasionally make repairs to standard laboratory equipment. Makes moderately complex decisions and resolves research problems within established protocols; requires some independent judgment. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, neurobiology, or biomedical sciences and at least two years laboratory experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- A wet-lab experience (6 months or more)
- Experience in PCR and DNA electrophoresis
- Experience in rodent handling
- Experience in any histological or simple protein methods (e.g., western blotting)
- Working knowledge of applicable computer software and applicable professional principles
