Department & Position Summary


The mission of the Department of Criminal Justice studies is to enhance the public good through community engagement and action research. A strong analytical function is essential to building healthy and intelligent criminal justice organizations that resist deviance and embrace institutional learning and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will contribute to this mission by providing crime analysis expertise in the community that will enhance transparency, organizational accountability, reduce bias and deviance, assist in recruitment and selection of diverse personnel, and effectively direct limited resources. This position directly addresses a pressing need in our urban community as data collection and analysis is a necessary remedy to biased policing, use of force and deviance issues, and biased recruitment, selection, and promotional practices. An experienced urban crime analyst from a diverse background can bring much needed perspective and data-driven solutions to the conversations on police reform and officer wellness.


Responsibilities


The successful candidate will have experience in the accountability/transparency function of crime analysis and the use of intelligence technology that may include one or more of the following: experience using GIS to map police violence, developing databases to support stronger community oversight of the police, using evidence-based policing strategies to support police accountability and reduce excessive use of force, collecting data on police stops to detect racial profiling, evaluating the impact of technology on civil liberties, and/or providing clear and concise information to the public on criminal and police activity.

Successful candidates will have instructor-level proficiency in the following areas: Geographic information systems for crime mapping and spatial analysis; Computer information systems including the use of spreadsheets, development of relational databases, office productivity software, and specialized analytical software; Data-driven and evidence-based policing strategies; and policing organizational and administrative functions including operations, accountability, and risk management functions.


Required Qualifications


We seek to assemble a cohort of teacher-scholars who will offer a strong contribution to the diversity and excellence of UA through teaching, scholarship, service and collaboration. Specifically, as an urban-research university, we are particularly interested in scholars whose work touches on the pressing needs of cities and urban communities. Needs and problems include, but are not limited to: families, health disparities, criminal justice/police reform, race/ethnicity broadly, environmental justice, social justice, urban planning, economic justice, or LGBTQ+ issues.

The successful candidate will have at least 2 years of experience as a crime analysis practitioner in a diverse urban environment. A Master's or higher degree in Criminal Justice, Statistics, Computer Science, Geography, or a related field.


Preferred Qualifications


Crime analysis certification is preferred (such as IACA).

The compensation for this position is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
