THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN KNOXVILLE, TN
This non-tenure track faculty position provides medical reference services in the library and clinical setting and coordinates the staffing and training for the central information services desk, including staff scheduling and oversight of policies and procedures. Working with all library staff and faculty, the librarian determines information desk needs and balances staffing requirements while carefully coordinating the delivery of services to support evidence-based practice. Expert searching of medical and nursing literature using a variety of sources will be required of this position as part of general reference services. This position is also responsible for managing the training for all new hires and the ongoing training of current staff. This position initiates and participates in research and scholarly activities and will participate in library professional organizations locally, regionally, and nationally. Other reference services include staffing the reference desk, developing, and teaching education programs, developing research guides and core collections, using reference software, maintaining reference statistics, and promoting scholarly communications.
This position also provides marketing for both the academic medical library and the consumer health library by managing several electronic social media accounts for a variety of unique audiences and working closely with both the medical center marketing team a9999ices for audiences across the area, including in hospital settings. Other library duties include website design, composing news publications, editing written material submitted by library staff and faculty to outside sources, photographing library events, creating engaging visual displays and design elements, and ensuring the library’s presence in the community remains professional and positive.
Other duties include developing education programs, integrating information literacy and health literacy into the curriculum, teaching consumer health information resources to community groups and other library partners, participating in library and information science research and biomedical research related to information and consumer health literacy. This position works some evenings and weekends.

RESEARCH/TEACHING/PATIENT CARE DUTIES:
Other duties include developing education programs, working with the Assistant Director to integrate information literacy and health literacy into the curriculum, teaching consumer health information resources to community groups and other library partners, participating in library and information science research and biomedical research related to information and consumer health literacy. Expert searching of medical and nursing literature using a variety of sources will be required of this position as part of general reference services. This position initiates and participates in research and scholarly activities and will participate in library professional organizations locally, regionally, and nationally. In addition to electronic marketing, this position is responsible for leading in-person outreach events throughout the community to provide educational information about library services for audiences across the area, including in hospital settings. Other library duties include website design, composing news publications, editing written material submitted by library staff and faculty to outside sources, photographing library events, creating engaging visual displays and design elements, and ensuring the library’s presence in the community remains professional and positive.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master of Science in Information Science from an ALA-accredited school
- Medical Library Association Academy of Health Information Professionals credentialing within six months of hire.
- Medical Library Association Consumer Health Information Specialization within six months of hire.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in health sciences libraries
- Able to work some evenings and weekends.
DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES:
Specialty Skills
Marketing, writing/editing, reference, instruction, staff management, database searching, consumer health, academic health sciences or hospital librarianship.
Background or experience
Knowledge of library reference sources and database searching skills including the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed and CINAHL. Strong service orientation, self-motivation, flexibility, and the ability to multi-task. Experience developing marketing tools and programs in a variety of formats. Creation of staff development training and support materials. Demonstrated analytical, written, and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team. Exceptional networking skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a clinical or hospital setting with marketing responsibilities. Demonstrated skills in providing patient education and working with health consumers. Instruction experiences with graduate students in the health sciences.
Experience with health sciences collection development.
